My IVF baby is nearing a year old and we have one more frozen embryo to try. Can someone who's been through the process tell me what it's like leading up to the transfer for next baby without all the egg retrieval?
I have been exclusively pumping breastmilk and my period has not returned, but I plan to quit pumping at 12 months. I assume I'll wait a few months until my cycle is regular. Do they just monitor me then do the transfer? I will be 39. Not looking for suggestions about spacing. Thanks for any insights regarding transfer. |
| My clinic required that I had weaned at least three months earlier to start the cycle. You have to take a couple of weeks of drugs (progesterone, etc) to schedule a transfer date, but it is much easier without a retrieval. |
+1 to this. |
| My clinic allowed me to start some testing before period returned, like an ultrasound. But giving the green light on the drugs and baseline blood work required a period, I think. Also doctor will want updated records from delivery if anything unusual happened (surgery, etc.). |
| I did an FET when my first child was 14 month old. I only made it a few months breastfeeding so had stopped over 8 months before the transfer. The prep up to transfer was so easy compared to a fresh cycle, but after, I had 11 weeks of progesterone in oil (PIO) shots after. I made it through but that long a time for intramuscular injections was rough (and I did them all myself - my DH is terrible with needles). But the cycle was successful! My boys are 22 months apart. My youngest is 8 yrs old now - not sure if the PIO protocol is different now? Also - both times we transferred two embryos and both times I had a healthy singleton. I understand now clinics tend more to test embryos and only transfer one. |

It may depend on your clinic. Like the PP, I quit breastfeeding early on and my period returned to normal. However, my RE only required that I had a real period before starting any baseline testing. They did a saline sonogram to look for any scarring and some bloodwork. Everything came back normal and we just waited a couple months to do the transfer for our preferred spacing.
Regardless of when you want to do the transfer, I’d schedule a consult right away because it took me a couple months to get a meeting with my RE! At least at my clinic, they treat you as a “new” patient for scheduling purposes. |
