I have volunteer work this Wednesday and SR will stop by to distribute ashes at the office. I know my volunteer supervisor and some of team members might keep ashes on. Should I say “Happy Ash Wednesday?” Does “Have a good lent” sound more appropriate? Or should I not say anything at all? Sorry for being clueless but would like to be polite when I see them this Wednesday. Thank you for your help! |
No need to say anything, just don’t say “you’ve got something on your forehead” |
Ditto -- it is not a day to be celebrated and it is observed only by getting ashes on your forehead while being reminded that you are dust and to dust you shall return. |
Isn’t the point to remind other people? Otherwise the ashes could just be inside your wrist or something. |
“Hi” works |
Happy Lent or Happy Ash Wednesday. I don't see anything wrong with wishing someone a good lent. Happy fast? |
"You've got some schmutz on your keppe." |
do you say to a jewish perosn your hat is too small? or a musllim person praying, do you need a hand up? |
"Have a good lent"?! This is too stupid for words. Say nothing. |
No, the point is not at all related to other people. It's about reminding the person receiving the ashes that they will return to dust someday. |
Lent is not a happy occasion. Just say hi. |
This |
Ummm no - its not really a celebration - its a time of preparation for the resurrection of the Lord. The celebration is Easter. |

It’s a time to prepare for Jesus being murdered. Happy funeral? |
