Course selections for next year are due tomorrow and we are stuck. Kiddo is a junior this year and is taking Dual Enrollment Pre-Calc and doing quite well. Options for next year are AP/AB Calc or AP Stats. Anyone have any thoughts on which one they should choose? Any experience with either of these classes? They already will be taking a full course load next year and counselors have said Calc is not needed to impress colleges at this point since not planning on a STEM major. Kiddo leaning towards the Stats class as it sounded interesting. Thanks! |
If not on the STEM track for college, I would think AP Stats would be a great option since it sounds like your kid will already have a heavy workload. |

I'd go for stats, which is useful in a lot of non-STEM fields |
AP Stats has a reputation for being easier than AP Calc. Don't know if that's actually true. I suspect from a college perspective, it shouldn't make much of a difference, if any. |
My rising Junior plans to take both senior year. |
If your kid is going to have to take calculus in college due to a pre-rec or general requirement, I would stick to AP Calc. If not, AP stats is probably fine and more relevant to the real world. AP stats is not really statistics as it would be taught by a math or applied math department, it is more like what a sociology or another department would teach. |
Would any of the IB math classes be an option here? |
