New England in August?

Anonymous
I’d love to spend a month in New England now that we can remote work. I’m looking for somewhere decently pretty, close to hikes with the possibility of a summer day camp for the kids. What affordable city should I be looking at? I looked at Bar Harbor but it was too expensive. Somewhere in New Hampshire or VT?

Look in the Berkshires or Western Massachusetts.

Southern NH is basically suburban Boston so will have the most day camp options.
The farther north you go the closer you are to lakes and mountains.
Personally I prefer the vibe in and near Burlington VT.

Take a look at camps near Hanover NH. We spent a summer there when our kids were younger and they did day camps at the Montshire Science Museum and another camp run by the NH Audubon Society at a nature preserve near there. Hanover is a fun place to spend the summer for adults too and the options for renting a house are pretty good because it's a college town.

It's gorgeous there! It's right across the bay from Portland which has a lot of great restaurants.

I second this recommendation.

Is it possible to rent a house for $3k? Everything I’ve seen is in the $5k range, but that’s on VRBO and AirBnB

I assume you mean per week? On the Cape you can get some for $3k/week. Not familiar with the rental prices in other locations but $3k/week should be doable in western MA if you stay away from Lenox.

You could stay on cape cod and put your kid in a camp there - there are a lot of sailing camps of your kids want to learn to sail

Not sure of the day camp situation but you could rent something nice in the North Conway area.
