24 hour nursing cost

Anyone done this? My 89 year old mom who had a stroke wants out of the nursing home

An actual RN or a CNA?

It will depend on where your mom lives and what kind of care she needs.

My parents live in southern CA and when my Dad looked into it for my mom he was quoted $30,000/month for 24/7 care. That was an agency that would send over caregivers round the clock, but not live in. My mom had dementia but was still mobile and would wander--so she didn't need actual "nursing" care as much as a "babysitter."

We were paying $15/hr for a certified nurse, immigrant, under the table care. They didn’t live in, but someone would spend the night and someone was there 24/7. Three different ladies dividing up shifts - about $120k/year and my mother got very very good care in her own home in the SF Bay Area

15/hr in the Bay Area under the table… you are exploiting these workers (in addition to doing something illegal)

It would be a lot more than that in CA, RN can make $100/hour due to labor laws. But it's not clear what exactly pp meant by a "certified nurse", a CNA would be less but certainly not $15/hr in that state.

Op, I would assume at least $30/hour for RN care, less if you just need a CNA or sitter/companion.

When my dad in Florida needed 24 hour care, it was about $20-25/hour for a home health aide through an agency. On care.com, it was about $20/hour. However, by the time, you pay worker's compensation and payroll taxes, it really wasn't much cheaper than going through an agency. Fortunately, my dad would sleep through the night so we didn't need 24/hours/day care. however, even 12 hours/day was not affordable. It's a tough situation.

I set up 24/hr care in my mother's home for her last Spring. This was in NY, about an hour north of Manhattan.

It cost $2,800 a week, which covered two people. Each received a weekly salary of $1,400 as a "live in" - which worked out to each working roughly a 12 hour shift and handing off to each other for coverage as needed for personal errands, sleep, etc...

I hired them through an agency, but they were sisters so they worked really well together as a team.

It isn't a level of cost we would have been able to sustain for more than a few months, but my mother was terminally ill so it was well worth it to ensure maximum comfort in her own home in her final weeks.

I think we paid about $400/day in NY, on the books. New York has a 13 hour rule though so you don't have to pay for 24 hours to have someone there for 24 hours. We had three different caregivers switching off after 24 hour shifts. Good luck! But remember that having your mom out of a nursing home at at home where you are coordinating everything can be a lot of work.

I'm pp, yes its not clear what PP meant by 'certified nurse.' I assumed they meant a CNA, which $20-30 is the hourly rate for them at the moment.

My neighbor was spending 15K/month for 24/7 care for her mom. They are wealthy, so wasn't an issue.
