New Good Council Coach

Any information on the new GC lax coach? Apparently he’s coming from St Andrews?

It’s good counsel.

I hear kids like him and he’s a good coach.

You need to specify “boys” in your heading.

So you seem to mean boys and that’s Dave Mitchell. Every one in DMV boys lax world knows him. He is fine. Not great. Not bad.

Coach Dane Smith - he's a great role model for high school boys.

Coach Smith starts next year. GC has an interim coach for this season. Major rebuilding necessary. Don't know if they even have a goalie for this spring.

Ok, so I'll play, if he's getting GC, who's getting St. Andrews?

It’s not an IF, Dane Smith has been announced as the future head coach of Good Counsel: https://dcsportsfan.com/2021/12/15/good-counsel-hires-new-boys-lacrosse-coach/amp/

Heard recently that St Andrews is down to final few contenders. Haven’t seen an announcement yet.

Was a great role model. He is loosing a ton of respect for how he has conducted himself at SAES during this preseason. Technically, he is not supposed to work with GC until June. But he has been working with GC boys, while short-changing his current team (SAES). With GC's announcement yesterday that Dane's old OC and JV coach will be the interim at GC, it has become very clear that, no matter what Dane says, he is already coaching GC and not focused on SAES. He should have left the team when he announced his move in December.

great coach and great recruiter. Coach has done amazing things with SAES and he will bring another contender to WCAC with GC. He has the facilities now and will own western MoCo.

Most of his under classmen recruits at SAES are headed with him to GC next year and they are really strong. Good things down the road for GC! Falcons will make some noise

If GC is getting SAES recruits, would they even beat the Heights? A pretty mediocre Landon team killed them last year, it was like a private/public matchup.

SAES competes in a terrible conference for lacrosse. This is their record for last season. I know public schools that play a harder schedule.

04/09 Landon (6-6) DC IAC L5 - 18
04/18 vs Virginia Episcopal (0-5) VA 2 VIC W6 - 5
04/22 Maret (2-4) DC MAC W7 - 3
04/29 @ Sidwell Friends (2-4) DC MAC W3 - 11
05/01 Sidwell Friends (2-4) DC MAC W14 - 1
05/08 @ St James (0-2) DC MAC W3 - 18
05/13 Gonzaga (6-3) DC WCAC L2 - 13
05/22 Flint Hill (1-5) DC MAC W16 - 3
05/27 Potomac School (4-2) DC MAC W11 - 8

Aside from Landon & GZ.....pretty easy schedule. Was a COVID year....so maybe they could not get all the games they wanted. IF the players Coach Smith recruited do follow him to GC it would likely help the program. But they are a few years away from competing in the WCAC. Ryken is in a pretty good area for lacrosse talent....yet they have fallen off the map in lacrosse as their talent appears to go elsewhere. SJC has some players from that area. GC is in a prime area to get talent being around Howard/Mont/Frederick/Carroll counties. They never seem to get any of the local talent as it goes to MIAA schools. Maybe Coach Smith can change it. Who knows

It will be very interesting to see if Smith can change the perception of Good Counsel lacrosse over the next 5 years.

They are years behind from even trying to compete with GZ, SJC and PVI. I suspect Good Counsel will gradually get better and cement itself as a top 5 team in the league and will surpass DeMatha.

Good Counsel's location is interesting as it can draw kids from Eastern Frederick, Southern Howard County, and Northern Moco.

The previous poster is right as most kids living in Howard county have always gravitated north to the MIAA schools. Good Counsel football has dozens of kids in their football program from Howard county so history shows families from HOCO are willing to send their kids to Olney under the right coach and program.

agreed great coach and will do well but will take a season or two. Two years of recruiting plus the boys he brings over will have them competing for at least top third of WCAC.

GZ and SJC are far and away the leaders there, but there's room for GC. Hoping BI and PVI continue to get better. New coaching at PVI needs to be proven but they will pull athletes form Loudoun and Pat can do well at BI if he gets some horses.

Agreed with PP, GC has a great facility and is in a geographical good spot to recruit talent. Let's see how it goes. Smith is a solid coach and good for the sport
