Something reflextive to run in that won't embarrass 9th grader?

Anonymous
DD is a rising 9th grader talking about joining Xcountry in fall 2022. She will be attending a new HS where she won't know anyone. Xcountry is in the fall when it gets dark at like 4 pm. They run all over the place - streets, neighborhoods, etc...

Is there anything reflective I can have her wear that will not totally humiliate her? I'd just assume buy this but she would never!!! - https://www.amazon.com/Shinecailife-Adjustable-Reflective-Construction-Walking-Wear/dp/B07FBM3W9P/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?crid=2UAADO01WVN6Y&keywords=reflective+patrol&qid=1645201319&sprefix=reflective+patrol%2Caps%2C120&sr=8-3-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExNzZXM0ZUTVBRSllLJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwNjUzNjgzM09IOUM0SFVFNlpSMSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNDEyNDM0MU83NEdZTzVIUDczNCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

Is there anything like an arm band or laces (that actually would be helpful) or something discreet but that also does the job? Thanks!

She should not run in the dark. If she’s running with school in the dark - they will handle illumination but more likely running on the track.

I don't have an answer for you but have seen many a group of HS students, which I assumed were on cross country but have no real idea, running on roads at dusk/dark, and felt they were hard to see. I have seen some of those kids with bright clothes on, some with reflective stuff, and some looking like they're asking to be hit, as they wear dark clothes. Hope someone here can help.

I already did. Lol. They shouldn’t be running on the roads at night. What time does school get out? I doesn’t get dark 4.

You can buy running shoes that are reflective, and several athletic brands sell clothing that is attractive but also has reflective striping, or reflective design elements on them.

It's not cheap, but better than a kid getting hit by a car. CHeck athleta, lululemon or whatever it is, and look for dupes on amazon. Plenty of fall/winter running gear has reflective striping or design on it. Also, she should be wearing reflective gear even when its light out.

My daughter ran XC this year. It isn't Alaska here. It doesn't get dark until past 5:30pm in early November when the XC season ends. The only time she ever ran in the dark with the team is when the XC coach had very early morning practices under the lights on the track to do speed or hurdle drills.

Headsweats is a very popular brand for running hats and they have some very reflective options. More than being reflective, make her wear a white or close to white top. Dark tops with dark bottoms are hard to see and reflective tape only works if a light is shining on it which likely won't happen near dusk

You are over thinking this a little bit OP.

Both my son and daughter run high school track and cross-country. Cross country is a fall sport that runs early August till late October, maybe the first week in November.

Practice is every day after school from 3:30 to 5:30. SPP said, it is still light out then.

Also they run in groups, on sidewalks in neighborhoods around the school, so they are pretty visible. Or they run on the track of the school.

Just let her run in whatever she’s comfortable in. But do get her fitted for good shoes at Road runner sports or Potomac River runners.

PS, if she doesn’t know anyone, cross country is a great team to join to meet people. It is the most welcoming club at my kids’ school. Everyone is really supportive, regardless of your performance.

It’s great that she’s thinking about it now, and she should be training now and in the summer early in the morning before it’s hot to go running. If she can run 2 miles in less than 19-20 minutes, without walking, she’s in good shape as a freshman.

When I say early morning I mean like 7-9am which is early for teens in the summer but still light out.

I bought my brother a reflective shirt and hat that he wears. He’s an adult and runs for exercise but didn’t want to wear the bright vests. They were grey but looked shiny like tin foil when lights hit, at least according to the reviews. I can’t find the link but similar are on Amazon in many varieties and types of clothing and accessories.

If they need some specific reflective gear the coach will tell them. You are totally overthinking this.

All running shoes are reflective.

Oiselle makes reflective clothing. They're a woman (and runner) owned company. There's a bunch in their sale section right now.
