Foamy, frothy smoothie - how to fix?

Anonymous
I'm not a breakfast person. I never have been. I feel nauseous if I eat before 10:30.

I started seeing a nutritionist this year and she had me try smoothies for breakfast. I found I've been able to tolerate these really well.

But, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Mine always ends up with a foamy froth on top that really grosses me out. I also don't like sipping a smoothie through a straw because the portion in the straw settles and gets warm, so the initial sip is a warm blast of smoothie. It's very off-putting and again, grosses me out.

Is it because I don't have a fancy smoothie blender like when I order one from a shop? I have a NutriBullet that I mainly use. I also use an immersion blender sometimes. Is it the milk I use? I use almond or oat milk. Is it the protein powder I'm adding? Even when I follow a smoothie recipe exactly, I'm get froth. Should I not use milk and opt for water or juice instead?

Please, share you smoothie secrets with me.

Whey protein powder gets really frothy. I’d guess that’s the issue.

I clicked on this topic to add this comment, but someone beat me to it! I avoid whey protein powder for this exact reason. So gross.

I've never used powders, so don't know about that, but I think you need more frozen ingredients-they will make the smoothie more uniformly thick.

You could use a spoon to scoop out the foam from the top. Also, try to add frozen or cold fruit, or ice cubes. Cold smoothies taste much better.

What if you made it and let it sit for half an hour in the fridge? The frothy bubbles would pop and you can stir and avoid the froth.

I don’t use whey powder but mine gets that gross foam when I use nut butters. I stir it in.
Chia seeds don’t seem to have that effect, nor does Greek yogurt if you are looking for other protein sources.

+1. I use frozen fruit, a banana, and Greek yogurt in mine. They come out thick and I eat them with a spoon (topped with All Bran or Grape Nuts for crunch).

I got a very weird froth from collagen.

We never get foam but we only add frozen berries, yogurt, and water. Cheap $75 waring blender.

Add way more ice. Your smoothie is too liquidy.

I use whey powder and don’t get froth. I use frozen fruit, banana, water or some kind of milk, spinach or kale. I blend with a Vitamix. Never had froth.

Yogurt, frozen berries, fresh fruit (banana, mango, etc.), Nutribullet -> never any froth.

Try using coconut water instead of protein powder or milk alternative. My favorite smoothie is a banana, orange, few slices of pineapple, handful of spinach, sprinkle of tumeric, sprinkle of ginger powder and coconut water.

Why don't you just spoon out the froth? Seems like a simple enough fix.

You don't need as much protein as people tell you, so protein powders don't need to be added. You could perhaps, if you like it, include a quantity of nut butter.
