ACHS—how does the satellite campus work?

Anonymous
Our kid was the rare bird who loved learning online. We’re in middle and the transition back has been rocky. DC loves a quieter working environment and moving at their own pace. How does the ACHS satellite campus work? The website just talks about whether or not you would do classes in the morning or afternoon. It’s not clear to me what’s online and if it is online synchronous instruction or self-paced? And can they go to the campus for part of the day for certain classes (science comes to mind). What about taking classes at NOVA which seems to be talked about a lot. Would love to learn more and hear people’s experiences.

Our kids are younger, but I’m curious about this too.

I know someone with two kids at the satellite campus and they are huge fans. I don’t know much about it and I think it works for certain in students who don’t need the regular in-person teaching and peer socialization.

Pre Covid my neighbor's kid went there due to depression and other mental health issues. He would half day to the location near the Braddock Metro, and then had a few classes at ACHS. He also took a reduced schedule. The experience was very positive for him, he graduated in 5 years (vs 4) and is doing very well at a well known and highly regarded college often discussed on DCUM.

You could also go fully virtual with Virtual Virginia. I think ACHS allowed that for this year; perhaps it will continue as an option going forward. You could also sever ties with ACPS entirely and do Virginia Virtual Academy:

That’s really great. So many kids suffer so much with depression etc. and end up missing a lot and eventually making up classes. Makes so much sense to take more time. Glad he is doing well!
