What is the point of elementary report cards

I just reviewed my 1st graders report card. What’s the point? I mean this seriously. It offers no information and the teacher write up is stock language. This is the first report card that doesn’t have someone else’s name in the comments - so I guess that’s a plus. But, why do them at all? Seems if there was something significantly good or bad to say, teachers find other ways to communicate. At the very least, why not do them 1-2x a year instead of 4? Seems like a real waste of time.

It's a complete waste. I don't even bother opening them any more. Once they switched to the standards bs I stopped paying attention to them. They're useless.

Report cards are legal documents that follow a kid throughout school. They shouldn’t be telling parents anything they don’t already know, especially in elementary school. If your kid is struggling, you will already know and if you child is above average, you’ve already been notified.

Op here. I understand schools need some sort of formalized communication between school and parent, at least as a cya measure. But 4x a year is excessive. I’ll take those grade prep days back for instructional time.

So that everyone is a winner

Huh? ES Teacher here. Lots of kids are not getting all 4's/A's (whever your school uses) and lots of kids also have behavioral issues and/or other classroom issues.

Its great that your student is excelling but not all students are and their parents definitely need to know!

I have twins so it is easy for me to see that teachers write the exact same narrative comments for everyone (and my kids are pretty different!).

Report cards are one of the worst parts of teaching.

Our ES doesn't give out grades. Standards based grading. You can read every word and still not know how your kid is doing. Or how Sally is doing since sometimes we get other kid's narratives.

Compete waste of time.

They let you know how your kid is doing. If your kid is a doing well, they feel performative and unnecessary. I would bet that parents of kids who are struggling pay more attention to the report cards. We focus on the effort scores but made sure to meet with DS's teacher when his report card indicated a problem in a subject. We were able to talk, find out how we could help him, and worked with him a bit.

The comments are useless and could be removed at this point, they say nothing of value because they are just automated answers from a list that Teachers have to use. They don't tell you squat.

No, they don’t. I have one that struggled in areas in elementary school and one that did not. The report cards were equally useless. For my child that struggled with some behavior and academic issues, we had plenty of meetings and contact through the year. The report card was not important at all.

Did posts in here get deleted? I posted about non personalized feedback and wishing the comments explained how my kid could improve his grade, but it seems to have been deleted. Not sure what was wrong with it.

Nothing. I don’t even look.

This quarter DDs report card was even more useless than ever -- literally one line from her homeroom teacher saying she's on track. The other teachers didn't include any personal info at all. Why bother? I'd rather skip the teacher planning day and have them in school instead.

Agree! More teaching, less performative work.
