Taylor vs ashlawn vs long branch

Anonymous
Looking for houses that will either be in the ashlawn, long branch or Taylor district. Is one of the schools worse than the others? Teachers/good parental community at each? Or are there particularities that would be helpful to know?

We are at Ashlawn and love it.

All three are great schools -- have never heard anything bad about any of them. Long Branch is more diverse. Also, they all go to different middle schools, so its worth looking at that when you're making your decision. Swanson is more crowded, TJ has the IB program, Hamm is walking distance to most of Taylor's zone.

Long Branch is much smaller than the other two with only 400 students. Taylor and Ashlawn are both over 500.

Depending where you live, you can find a house that is walking distance to both Ashlawn and Swanson middle. We’re at Ashlawn and like it.

this is like asking do you like hardboiled eggs, scrambled eggs or fried eggs better. They are all eggs with mild differences.

One thing you'll learn about APS is to not get TOO attached to your neighborhood school as boundaries are ever shifting to balance enrollment.

So make sure you like the schools nearby too

They’re talking about a county-wide elementary school boundary change on another thread. Apparently the discussion will start in the fall and all planning units are on the table.

Ashlawn is great - but just be careful so you don't end up at Kenmore for MS. Another thread talked about the gangs and issues.

Here we go again
Someone clearly has a specific attitude or problem with Kenmore. Kenmore is fine.

Taylor has a weird open classroom dynamic because was built when that was a fad…and you know APS loves them an edufad. You can get a house walking distance between Taylor and Hamm which is nice. There is also a great neighborhood pool that most of the kids will go to so it can be a really nice community. The principal is a little uneven but I wouldn’t base my decision on that.

+1 Many have started to send their MS kids to private school or do neighborhood transfers. Things were getting better there before the pandemic; now it's a getting bad. I would NOT send my daughter there.

Isn't Taylor getting a new principal from Key next year? Anyone from Key give any feedback on her?

Those are 3 different neighborhoods and demographics.
Where do YOU want to live for your commute?
What do YOU want to live near as far as restaurants, bike trail, walk to school, coffee shop, etc.
Who do you want to be friends with?

Go to parks in each neighborhood on a sunny day after school and see who is there. Walk around on a Saturday afternoon. Look at the cars in the driveways and their bumper stickers.
