Vocals in Figure Skating Programs

When there are vocals, why are the usually in English? Why not pick music with vocals in your native language?

Like the French ice dancers who won the gold? The song was outstanding though.

English songs are popular the world over, and it’s the language most universally understood. Lots of people from non-English speaking countries sing their songs in English (sometimes in addition to their native language).

I do think we will start to see more non-English songs as they rise in popularity. But for now, the classic crowd-pleasers are in English.

I noticed a lot of French and Italian songs too. The Romance languages are so pretty in music.

Not a lot of German though…

They've been used previously. I think when BTS songs are used, the song can overshadow the skater.

This one is nice

This isn't answering the question, but I am so happy that they started allowing music with vocals. I love it.

Part of the strategy is to pick music that the judges will like, be familiar with, or otherwise enjoy...it's such subjective judgement already (almost as bias as gymnastics or boxing judging) that skaters really need to choose music to set the (good) mood...and if English vocals are it then so be it.

Fwiw, keep in mind what you see on TV is just a snapshot of the whole event. There are definitely skaters skating to music in their own language, but just aren't aired (at least on American tv).

+1 Props to the skater who used the Eurythmics. So fun!

I haven’t actually listened to BTS (I’m old; love to Big Bang and DBSK) but I also think more skaters should use hip hop! Innovation is great; there’s only so many times I want to see a program to Vivaldi’s winter, much as I love The Four Seasons.

I love the ice dancers who used Janet Jackson’s sexiest song and kept in all the moaning. Respect.

remember a couple years ago the Canadian team all used different songs from Moulin Rouge ? That was creative and cool.
