How long after getting a methotrexate shot (for possible ectopic) can you start ttc again (assuming you've gotten your period)? Is it just a matter of getting your period again or having HCG levels go back down to 0 similar to a regular miscarriage? I've read elsewhere online that you need to wait 3-6 months because the methotrexate depletes folic acid from your body and so you will not have any folic acid in your system for a while to develop healthy eggs/embryo.
Does anyone know? I'm about to get the shot and it's all happening so fast, I just found out about the possibility of the ectopic this morning but I am still very early, less than 5wks. |
| I had to have methotrexate 2 years ago for an ectopic. I was told I needed to sit out one cycle before trying again. I ended up waiting two cycles after before trying again, as I was doing bcps as part of the subsequent IVF cycle. |

I was told to wait a full cycle from the next period with a minimum of 30 days.
My HCG went to 0 a week after the MTX shot, and I got my period back a week after that. Then we need to wait a full cycle. So it'll actually be eight weeks after the shot by the time we start (2 weeks, 4 weeks, 2 more weeks until ovulation.) Hang in there! I know from very recent experience how scary those days can be between discovering an ectopic, getting the shot, and eventually confirming the HCG is back down to zero. Once it gets there, start popping your prenatal vitamins again to get your folic back up. Good luck! |
| My OB said one month (and hcg = 0) would be enough, but a GW IVF physician insisted that 3 months was the minimum. I know someone who conceived after just waiting one cycle and had a healthy baby. |
