OHSS Prevention with Diet

I'm starting stims and I'm at high risk for OHSS. Was there a certain amount of fluids, Gatorade vs. coconut water, or particular foods that helped you prevent OHSS?

I'm on metformin and starting with low-dose protocol. I'm just curious about natural things I can do at home to help.

Tomato juice, Gatorade. Also, they can (almost) eliminate the risk of OHSS by using a Lupron trigger rather than hcg.

Thank you! I asked my doctor about Lupron and she wasn't keen. I'm going to ask her to explain why she's against it in my case. Do you think avoiding sugar helps? I know Gatorade has a lot of sugar, but I'm sensitive to aspartame and I don't like the taste of Gatorade Zero.

I think it does help to minimize sugar intake. Your provider may be more inclined to trigger with hcg if she feels that the potential egg quality benefits might outweigh the OHSS risk.

I’ve never heard of anybody being put on a regimen at the start of a cycle. Rather it’s typically decided if OHSS will be a risk a few days before retrieval if you have an abnormally large volume of follicles. At that point your doctor may start you on low-dose aspirin and the salt and protein diet. You’d continue on it if you had a large volume of eggs retrieved.

That was what I have in my case; I did not have any risk factors going into it but I wound up stimming high and started the diet two days before retrieval and followed a few days later (had 25 eggs). I also had to do a freeze cycle rather than the first transfer I had planned due to heightened risks. OHSS did not develop in my case.

As for what to consume think triple your protein intake and salty foods. I drank lot of electrolytes and bone broth, and ate protein at each meal plus two protein drinks a day (Special K has a line that weren’t terrible calorie wise) and a low carb protein bar one a day. Eggs and chicken breast for breakfast, salty pho or chicken soups with extra chicken for lunch or dinner. I did it for maybe 5-7 days between last follicle check and three days post-retrieval when it looked like I was in the clear.

Salt, protein and electrolytes. I ate potato chips, Gatorade and the muscle milk protein drink. This was following my retrieval, also had a high number of eggs (26).

+1 to salt, protein, and electrolytes. Plus a lupron trigger and no fresh transfer. I was very high risk for OHSS (estrogen >5000 the day before trigger) and managed to avoid it. I got 22 eggs from my retrieval.
I have PCOS, which I was told increased my risk.

Thank you. I followed this rule, but somehow still have OHSS. I guess I need to throw a pity party. Haha. I spent all last night throwing up, clammy, and with intense cramping. I'm going in today for an ultrasound or in case there's anything else I can do. We took every precaution (metformin, cabergoline, Hetastarch, diet) except for changing the trigger. I kept asking is it really a good idea to trigger with HCG, but my RE insisted. Given how I'm feeling, I really wish I would have used Lupron

I'm sorry. Hopefully it passes quickly.
Are you doing a fresh transfer? You can't do that with a Lupron trigger.

Thank you for understanding. No, unfortunately due to the OHSS it's not safe to do a fresh transfer. I'm taking progesterone to induce my period and hopefully shrink everything back down.

Yeah, if you were initially planning a fresh transfer, then that is why your RE was so insistent on an HCG trigger.
