Fancy racing suit - swimming

Anonymous
I am seeing that there are fancy swimsuits (Speedo Fastskin, etc) that are supposedly better. Does it make sense to get one of these types of suits for a year-round swimmer? I think I saw a kid wearing one at the last swim meet.

I would wait until the kid asks for one.

How old is the kid? There is a rule about what 12&Unders can wear. Partly because they really don't matter until the swimmer has some body to compress.

Mine never wore one. It isn't required and is more of a status thing really.

I'll add that the kid should be wearing a well-fitting (tight) suit, not a practice suit for a meet.

Often with the little ones, I see tech suits or just meet suits, that are too big, defeating the purpose.

Kid is under 12. What's the rule?

Most coaches will tell you that you are wasting your money at that age.

And, as the next poster points out, the top of the line ones are illegal under 12

My swimmer wore the Aquablade before tech suits. She is over 12 now, but it looks like these work for under 12:

When my son started qualifying for some of the bigger meets I got him a lower level tech suit... probably one step up from an Aquablade. The suit makes him feel tough and mentally it is his "big meet suit"but like people.say at his age (10) a suit isn't going to make a difference.

Another good one that is ok for under 12 is arena ST powerskin 2.0

Aquablades are basically the same cost of a regular speedo suit if you get them on sale at swimoutlet. And the Arena Powerskin 2.0 is just a little more, you can get for around $110. It’s really not that big of an investment. Most kids in my child’s group wear them as 12&us for big meets. For some kids, it’s the mental boost which is a big thing in swimming like lots of other sports.

Sport Fair in Arlington is an amazing suit store.

Is the sizing of the speedo the same as the sizing as their regular suits?
