Looking for a good track & field program for my 6th grade son. CYA doesn't have a program anymore so looking for another one.
Thanks |

Contact your local running store and ask.
Also, the usatf website might have some info. See the other threads on this forum about youth track programs. |
| I think Potomac Running store has a program. |
| FPYC has a great program. |
DP. Would you recommend this program for a second grader? Do you know if they keep it fun/light at that age? My son has endless energy and is a fast runner for his age. He did a youth program with Potomac River Running last spring and liked it, but that one will most likely conflict with another activity now. We are in the phase where we are just trying everything and seeing what sticks. I think track would be a good one for him to try but I am worried about injuries. I have a friend whose cousin was a runner as a kid and I remember that she had a bad overuse injury by her teen years… but I think she was doing more long distance running? I don’t know track so not sure if my concerns are warranted. |
Yes, FPYC would be great for a 2nd grader.. |
| We did FPYC running for our kids, it was well structured but not intense. You will want to register soon for whichever club you choose. FPYC focuses events near Fairfax City, SYA is Centreville, SYC is Springfield-ish, Nova is Leesburg, etc. |
I see that practices are on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays (if there's not a meet). Do they expect everyone to attend all three every week, or do people pick 2 out of 3 for example? I was hoping for more of a twice per week commitment for now since my child is also doing other stuff. Ideally they could go to the practice on Sunday and one other weekday. |
No expectation. You do you. |
| FPYC is a great youth running program. We had multiple children participate for several years. It's a large enough program that you have beginner runners through nationally competitive runners at every age group. Your child can attend as many or as few practices as works for them. It's popular, so as someone else mentioned, if you decide you're interested, make sure to register soon. |
