Rosslyn elementary schools - Marbella, etc

Anonymous
It looks like there could be a major influx of kids in Rosslyn (and Courthouse) based on the developments currently approved, and the ones likely to happen (I’m talking about the Marbella Affordable Housing project). Are all these kids really going to fit in Science Focus and Innovation? Is Rosslyn getting another school? I am just curious if anyone has any good guesses about what’s happening there in the medium-term. I assume it will take over 5 years for these buildings to come online (is that a decent assumption?)

Innovation was deliberately left empty to allow for kids from new development and changes in the long term number of kids who go to Key from the area. I think the 5 year time frame is probably accurate. When Marbella is fully online Innovation will resemble a Barcroft or Barrett.

Well this should help diversify Yorktown.

Not if they move Rosslyn to WL.

I don’t think they can do that. It’s my understanding there’s no diversity in Yorktown other than Rosslyn. And I actually don’t think Innovation is going to be asked to absorb all of Rosslyn in the next 5-10 years.

What makes you think that could happen?

WL has spaces with Ed center. Save on busing.

Gotcha. Does that mean less space for transfers from Yorktown to IB or is Yorktown going to get to keep their smaller HS plus get the option for WL?

My situation is that IB transfers will decline as the situation at wl gets more untenable, which will put more pressure on Yorktown and thus relieve it it by moving Rosslyn

What else are they going to do with them? These new complexes (Queen's Court, Marbella, etc) are being built with far less than one space per unit. They can't move them to Taylor because equity.

Actually, considering that the new principal a Taylor comes from Spanish immersion, it might be there plan to move Roslyn to Taylor, since many of them will likely be ESL

I think this could be the case. These new developments aren’t in a walk zone for any school, so they have to put them on a bus anyway.

Maybe... but current enrollment at Innovation is 412 including PreK. Pre-pandemic there were over 700 kids in that building. I think the plan is to just let it be a high FARMS school.

I agree. I think the plan is that Innovation will be a Title 1 School. APS will receive additional funding for the school and the County will deliver other kinds of services at the school. I don’t know what will happen with Yorktown and WL.

I also think they will go to Innovation, because it is well-served by public transportation, and Taylor is not. Most of those families are not going to have cars.
