| I’m looking for some new artwork. I don’t want prints- I want actual original art. I know Etsy has this but what other websites are good? I tend toward modern abstract pieces. |

I love abstract art. You didn’t mention budget, but if it’s not small these are some of the best galleries in DC, and they carry local artists. Many have their work in museums, this isn’t Etsy.

| I commission it from artists whose work I see online. |
+1 I do this as well. Pleased to say there are no prints of mass produced pieces in my house. |
| Start following the instagram account for your local art associations/art leagues. They’ll feature a variety of local artists and promote fairs/exhibits/sales etc. |
Where are you seeing them online? |

Washington Project for the Arts does an art sale every fall. Get on their mailing list: https://www.wpadc.org/content/your-inbox
And lucky you, the Art League in Alexandria is holding its patron's night & art sale on Feb. 20th. https://www.theartleague.org/event/patrons-show-fundraiser-2022/ What is your budget? I can recommend some other galleries but prices are on par with the quality ($$$$$). |
I follow a number of artists on Instagram who do commissions. Most of them are styles I really enjoy. But I have yet to purchase one because I am poor. |
Good for you, but there's nothing wrong with prints. People should buy what makes them happy, and for many, that's prints + spending their hard-earned money on things other than original art. |

+2 - it’s not that hard to google local artists. Also, just wanted to say, there is a difference between genuine prints and something like posters. Genuine prints are still cool to have and pretty affordable. |

This is not what you seek, but I watched a freelance woman artist at the National Galley making original “copies” of masterpieces.
She was amazing and I was definitely intrigued, especially if you could have her add or subtract something to the original painting. People would look at it and know it was an actual painting and likely think it was somehow familiar. |
