| When is the new school going to have a principal hired, and when will the school be named? It's supposed to open in August. |
| Those things typically happen for brand new schools in early spring, so probably March/early April. The application period for entry to the Principal/AP/ASA pool goes until the end of February. |
|
The board policy on naming school facilities is currently being revised (there's an agenda item about it tomorrow afternoon), so perhaps they are also waiting until the revisions are finalized before they name a new school.

| Teacher hiring is shifting earlier and new schools (Gaithersburg ES #8 and SVHS still hiring for upper grades) have priority start of March. Principal should be soon, other admin/leadership next, then teachers. |
|
The new principal was just appointed at the BOE meeting.
|
|
The BOE put forward three names as possibilities for the new school:
Kelley Park Celia Cruz Cesar Chavez |
|
Little surprised Patricia O'Neill Elementary School wasn't considered.
It would probably be more appropriate than any of the other 3. Though at least Kelley Park has a local connection |
I was expecting O'Neill to be on the list too, but maybe they are thinking of saving her name for the proposed new BCC/WJ elementary school. |
Good point. And that would definitely be a good fit |
| The board approved the new school's name today: Harriet R. Tubman Elementary School |
That wasn't one of the 3 names listed above. Was that from the committee? Or did BOE pick one that they liked better? |
Committee added it. https://go.boarddocs.com/mabe/mcpsmd/Board.nsf/files/CE6PC46381E0/$file/Naming%20Gaithersburg%20ES8%20220510.pdf |
I'm glad they listened to the committee and unanimously voted to approve their first choice. Too often it seems the committees do a bunch of work and make sound recommendations, and then the Board votes for something else. |
Thank you for posting this. I'm pleased to learn that BOE actually listened to the committee for the community's preference. |
|
Looks official now!
