| DD is interested in trying out. She's a decent player and been playing off and on since she was little. However, she's fairly committed to another EC that takes up a lot of time after school and on weekends. She wants to do tennis for fun, getting outside, and making friends since HS so far has been a bit off due to COVID. Are coaches typically ok if you don't attend every practice like in other team sports. And if you are not a top player and are not playing in the matches, are you still required to attend? We are in APS if that matters. |
| Can't speak to Arlington High Schools but at my kid's school, practice is every day after school unless you have a match that day, and all the kids go to the match whether they play in it or not. I know for boys, making the tennis team at the big high schools in this area is pretty competitive, so are you even sure she would make it? |
| No you can’t just skip practice because you have other ECs and you’re only playing tennis for socializing. |
| Tennis teams can be hard to make because some area school districts (like FCPS) only have varsity level (which certainly has expectations of full commitment to the season). I would say this is very school-dependent. |
| DS's school only carries 12 players JV & 12 players V, every boy plays in every match and it's extremely competitive. Most of the boys play competitively year-round. None skip practices willy nilly. |
| Piggybacking on the OPs post. My DD plays soccer competitively, and is in HS JV (shes a 9th grader), as well as in a travel team. She has also played tennis for several years on and off, and is interested in trying out for HS. She did some training in winter and is now taking private lessons. This is an MCPS HS-a magnet program where the sports are not as cut throat competitive for girls as her home school (one of the Ws). She will stop her lessons after the season at HS. Is this much commitment enough to make it to the team? |
Which school? IT really depends. I hear it is going to be competitve for RM this year but not sure what the competition will be like at Blair. Don't think it would be that competitive at Poolesville but really have no idea. Is she at a different magnet than the ones I mentioned? |
| No, she is at one of these schools. Do you have a child there as well playing tennis? |
No. From different friends. |
