Alexandria city already is a notoriously tough parking enforcer. You realize some of these cras may be properly permitted and legally parked, right?

Actually, it is prohibited by the city to park more than 72 hours without moving your car. Exact rule is: "Per Alexandria City Code, no vehicle may park in a given space on a public street for a period of more than 72 consecutive hours, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and holidays."

Yes, you are correct. My point was the PP who wrote "if I don't drive it for weeks at a time - and I don't - that's my business" is wrong. It is the city's business, and even if they got an exemption it is only for 2 weeks and up to 5 times a year. That still leaves 42 weeks of the year where you can't park it more than 72 hours (excluding weekends/holidays).

Right, so no problem if you get a permit. OP here and I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks, and have a permit lined up.

But most people are just leaving their cars parked for weeks, all year long, for no reason. Selfishly parked, at that (taking up "two spaces.) Or using the street as their personal junkyard or parking garage.

It's not. Street parking is not meant for long term parking. Find alternate means.

You’re entirely correct, but not going far enough. Why do we allow public land (the street) to be used to store private property (cars) practically for free? If you buy a car it should be on YOU to find and pay for a private place to store it. Either that or parking permits should cost $1000s to better reflect the actual costs they impose on society.

This is how they do it in Japan. You can’t park on a public street overnight.

OP, you should just go about setting parked cars on fire.

It’s what kids are doing in our neighborhood. You could probably get away with it too. Police certainly aren’t interested in finding them. They didn’t even want to bother looking at our Ring video, even though you could see them plain as day. They simply do not care.

It really is not such a big deal.
To keep peace in your neighborhood - I would not have someone else’s vehicle towed (even if it WAS legal to do so!)

Does Alexandria have a private car park where people could rent long term spaces? Seems like it is needed given the lack of driveways in Old Town.
