| I had to pick GWU for delivery due to a number of risk circumstances even though I was hoping to deliver elsewhere. Now that I'm entering 3rd trimester I'm trying to build a prep list for delivery. Can anyone who delivered recently at GWU tell me what supplies they offered for either you or your baby vs. what you were expected to bring from home? My Reddit Bumper group had a discussion about this, but it's not entirely helpful when people are telling you their experiences around the world. It sounds like generally in the US you'll have access to a lot of basics like diapers, creams, formula if you end up needing it, mesh undies, etc. But from there it really starts to vary on what they'll give you... like someone from Denver said their hospital didn't supply swaddle blankets for take home, only in while in the hospital so you needed to bring those with you. Or some hospitals supply shower supplies and others are BYOB. Totally understand that provided stuff might suck and you'll want to bring your own anyways, so that advice is helpful too. Can anyone remember what you were given and allowed to take home with you at GWU? |
| They provide for you: mesh undies and pads, Peri bottles, witch hazel pads, socks with grippies. You can take it all home. They have other things available if you ask, like nipple cream. They provide for baby: diapers, wipes, hats, bulb nasal sucker thing, j&j no more tears, two shirts, swaddle blankets for hospital use only. You can take everything but the swaddle blankets. They do not have toiletries for you (shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, etc.). |
| All the hospitals around here, and I imagine around the country, provide the same things. |
| Ask to get on Babyscripts the list is there |
|
Make sure to ask for extra PP supplies to take home. They gave me a huge bag of supplies of - mesh undies, ice pack pads, extra peri bottle, the spray, and witch hazel pads.
They had diapers, hats, and plenty of swaddle blankets for the baby. We took home some of the blankets we had used while there, can't remember if they gave us extra. The best swaddles are the velcro kind anyway, that is what we used when we got home. I was having trouble with my milk coming in due to a PPH and they gave us two boxes of RTF formula to go home with as well. Over all I was very happy with everything they supplied. All I needed from my own bag was clothes to change into, a cute outfit for my baby for pics and for going home, and my toiletry items. I also agree - check the list they provide on babyscripts or ask your OB for the print out. |
| This may be the first time I looked at anything on the Babyscripts app.... totally ignored it this entire time because I really don't care if my baby is the size of grapes this week, but glad to know they have this other information about the hospital stay since no one mentioned it to me at my appointments. |
Me too. where on babyscripts is it? |

Go to the resources section.
There is a ton of info that did specific to GW. Maternity Checklists 1,2,3 |
| thanks |
| Just delivered and everything listed is accurate! Only thing is they didn’t have baby emery boards and our baby had freakishly long nails haha. I did think that some of the techs were more stingy so just ask your nurse for extra supplies if needed. They were happy to teach us all the things too which we really appreciated. You and your partner can both order meals too and we were fine with the selection offered (as far as hospital food goes). |
Do you mean the list on the app? I’m still not finding it. Did they let your support person go get outside food at all? |
Sorry, I meant the items PPs have listed above. Support person isn’t allowed to leave but there’s a Starbucks and cafeteria that they can go to and you’re allowed to get delivery too. There’s also some snacks room that has a fridge and microwave if you wanted to bring your own food and I think DH said there’s some apples or yogurt in there. Random but you can eat gummies during labor too. |
|
Gummies are not considered clear.
I was about to eat some as I heard the same thing after my epidural was placed and the anesthesiologist told me no
|
| My L&D nurse at GW was the one who told my husband to buy gummy bears for me after I had my epidural and even told him where to go in the hospital to get them from a vending machine (this was 1 year pre-covid). |
