credits from summer school- Big 5

Anonymous
Do any of the privates (GDS, Maret, SFS, NCS, Holton et al) let their high school students take outside classes for credit? (eg, students are supposed to take AP History as a junior- can they take it during the summer of their sophomore year in summer school.)

Before people pile on the hate: I am curious if they do, and if they don't, why not. This doesn't have to be a hateful exchange.

TIA!!

I think that for the most part, they are very reluctant to do that, although if you had a strong enough reason for doing so they might allow it. I know some of the schools will let some students stake geometry the summer after 8th grade so that they can get on track to take Calculus Junior Year, but I think they set the bar pretty high for allowing that.

Def cannot do US HIstory outside of school. Other classes could be possble.

No way. Your child has to take classes at the school. They can’t guarantee the content or quality of a class elsewhere. It simply doesn’t work that way. Honest question- where were you thinking they would take the class? They might collaborate with a special language program for US.

I would think so in case a kid wants to graduate early, they’d have to find a way to get 4 years of English done in 3.

Graduate early from HIGH SCHOOL?? Is this a joke? Why would anyone do this to their kid? Bad enough the cheap parents who want their kid to use AP credit to cut college short but this? Just evil.

No, they’re not graduating early from a big 5.

Big 5 is still not a thing

Ok. Whatever. We all know the general idea of which schools OP is talking about here. This is not the thread for that argument.

That is quite a strong reaction. Not my cup of tea either as I am a social butterlfy, but I can imagine a kid for whom the experience of high school and even college, outside of the academics, it torture. They are missing nothing at all by blowing through it faster.

Typically kids are taking summer classes to free up the schedule for other courses, usually electives, they want to take at school.

While it was many years ago, I did this. Graduated from HS a year early. Best thing I ever did. I hated high school and was grateful to go to college early. I will forever be grateful to my parents and my high school counselor who helped me make it possible.

I’d guess the vast majority do it not to graduate early but to take more advanced courses or more interesting electives.

Unnecessary knock on AP. My DC doesn’t take AP so that they can get college credit. I expect and want them to take the full course load for 4 years. DC takes AP because it signals to colleges they are taking rigorous courses (yes I know local privates are dropping them and I’m sure their replacement classes are just as rigorous blah blah blah) and because it can allow one to skip the intro level classes in college that often are big, lecture-style classes.
