Car Issue - would like your input

Anonymous
I bought a used 2008 SUV this past January. Between February and today, our check engine light has turned on for six different issues. The vehicle has been at the dealer six times, each time ranging from one day to (most recently) 3.5 weeks while they waited for a part. Each time, they dealer has been accommodating and provided a loaner (albeit not as nice as my own car), but I find this really ridiculous and now I'm starting to get angry.

I've spoken with the state of VA and was told that the Lemon Law applies only to new cars. My only recourse, that I know of, is the warranty (which has covered all repairs to date).

What are your thoughts on this? How much of a pain in the arse can I be with the dealer? Do you think I have any recourse with the car maker?

Don't tell me . . . it's a Volvo XC90.

Whaaaat? You have this issue too?

I had a recurring problem with a brand new Honda and my dealer could never fix it. I went to a different dealer, exasperated, and they fixed it right and I haven't had any trouble since. I might try that if you have problems again.

Honestly it sounds like your mechanic is playing guessing games to try and diagnose the problem. Go to a place that knows what they are doing. If a check engine light is on, any self-respecting technician should be able to run the code, do the diagnostic tests, and identify the issue. Sounds to me like your tech is to lazy/ignorant to actually do the tests for the code and is just guessing at the problem.

Not the Op, but I just had my Volvo XC90 at the dealer this past week for the check engine light that just wouldn't turn off

I'm the "don't tell me" poster. Never again with a Volvo. This is out second and we bought them because I grew up with them and they were always good cars. I don't believe that anymore. I bought a Toyota -- recall and all, I'm still happier. It's way cheaper to maintain and I can use regular gas instead of premium.

In CR-V it means nothing. It automatically goes on at certain mileage pts to remind you to get it serviced. Both my father and I have cr-v
s (mine is a 2006) who have had it come on before. There was nothing mechanically wrong--the dealer just switched it off and told us this was why. They also told me dad sometimes when the gas cap isn't double-clicked the light will come on.

I am glad i know this (mine was under warranty at that time I had it checked out ) so don't get taken at a mechanics.
