Recommend your air purifier (especially for allergies and homes w/ pets)

Anonymous
I recently purchased Molekule air purifiers but returned them after reading the horrible reviews from Consumer Reports and NY Times. I'm looking for air purifiers for a home with pets and with allergy sufferers (no pet allergies - dust and environmental). I'm looking for small purifiers for each bedroom as well as one that can handle a large open space on our main level.

I greatly appreciate any recommendations!

BlueAir. Pricey, but definitely worth the extra money.

According to our doctor, the Most important criteria for air filters is that they have HEPA filters.

For our den/ living room area we have Honeywell 5 in 1 air genius that are narrow tallish towers that rotate and not too noisy.

However, LEVOIT Air Purifiers for Home Large Room, Smart WiFi and PM2.5 Monitor H13 has the best reviews.

For smaller rooms, we use Germ Guardian HEPA filters and Honeywell HEPA filter.

We also use expensive hypoallergenic filters for the forced air system and get heating-cooling system air vents cleaned every 2-3 years (if you are in DMV, AirWhiz are excellent).

We just had a major mold remediation and the air inspector who came to test complimented us on our Blue Air purifiers. He said they were by far the best on the market.

For those that purchased the Blue Air purifiers, where did you purchase it from?

Not according to consumer reviews rankings - number 6 this year. Also some of their models do not have HEPA filters.

OP The important thing is to have a HEPA filter whatever model you choose.

I have two Levoit filters. Keep one in the bedroom and I think that’s made a huge difference with how I feel in the mornings (I have lots of allergies and we have a cat).

Company website

Yes, I bought the big one with HEPA ("classic 605") and the smaller Blue 411 HEPA

Germ Guardian is actually really good, too

This was a pretty big goof by Consumer Reports; the absence of actual HEPA filters is a pretty key problem. I would not buy BlueAir filters (and your air inspector is poorly informed about HEPA.) Anything that is "HEPA" augmented by some other word or symbols ("HEPA+," "HEPASilent," etc) is not actually HEPA.

Here's a thread from an indoor air scientist who is on the ASHRAE epidemic task force, on air purifiers, and Blue Air specifically: https://twitter.com/marwa_zaatari/status/1375160654953340939?s=20

We got an Alen Flex partly based on Zaatari's data, and it's been great.

We have a Levoit in my son’s bedroom. He has asthma that’s triggered by allergies and it appears to help. We run in on high during the day and turn it on night mode at night. Thinking of purchasing a second one.

We have GermGuardian form costco for each bedroom. It is easily transported to living room if we want. Got them from costco, $95 each. It has UV light option, and timer option which we like a lot.
