New Partnerships with FEV Tutor and Tutor Me Education

Beginning on January 25, 2022, all students will have access to free tutoring and 24/7 Homework Help to support success in their current courses/grade level, through two new approved tutoring providers, FEV Tutor and Tutor Me Education. As part of comprehensive strategies to mitigate learning disruption associated with the pandemic, all students will have access to these virtual tutoring services through their MCPS Google Account, using Clever. Some students will also be referred directly by their local school. Click HERE for access directions.

This sounds like an interesting program.

I was really excited about this but the reviews are terrible. Sounds like the tutors are not that great.

I don’t know any students who like or use this. Every student I know interested in tutoring wants in-person tutoring.

We use it and really are appreciative.

Apparently only 15% of MCPS students are using these virtual/online tutoring services even though MCPS has set aside millions of dollars for this service.

I’m really glad they’re starting this. We’ve been paying OOP for tutors since 2020 and could really use that extra money back in our budget.

15% is a big chunk of kids. That seems like pretty good engagement to me.

My 9th grader just started using it for math and the tutor has been very helpful. Three one hour sessions a week. For my kid it has been super helpful and he really likes the tutor. Since it is ongoing and not just on demand the tutor knows what is happening and can be proactive in lessons. We are very thankful for this program.

Has anyone used this for reading for an ES kid? What teaching methods do the tutors use?

My ES kids use it.

One tutor uses read-aloud youtube videos.

Another tutor uses Commonlit and lets texts read-aloud.

Lots of activities like coloring/drawing related to a book, watching related videos, etc.

Tutors don't get paid much, so I can understand that they want to multi-task while teaching. But it would be nice to find somebody who is willing to teach.

It's free, but the quality is not there. Not much learning.

Wait...are you telling us that MCPS-paid, on-grade-level, online tutoring aimed at catching students up from pandemic learning loss/keeping students from falling behind their baseline grade of study is not achieving the same results as family-paid, acceleration- & enrichment-oriented, in-person tutoring aimed at exposing students to more interesting/advanced concepts and improving test scores at the higher end?

Mind. Blown.

How much do you pay for in-person tutoring per month per child?

Tutor quality is hit or miss. You can change if it is not a good fit. We’ve had a mix of ok to really good.

This is for everyone, or just those struggling. Stop blaming Covid. Kids have been in person two years now.

Who is paying for this though?
