What would you think when a family has two smart but unhooked kids that got into HYPS (not the same year). Neither are sporty either and they aren’t legacy or donors. Just regular educated professional people
I am both jealous and admiring at the same time. Ugh. |
|
They are old money and you don’t know it.
Connections |
| Both are super super smart kids but don’t blab about it. |
| What the previous two said |
| At our public they were brilliant debaters. |
Not uncommon for TJ families |
| They are hooked, it’s just not obvious. |
OP here. No, literally no hooks. Not URM, not first gen, not low socioeconomic stats. But seriously super nice smart kids though, which is why I admire them. |
| Whait does hooked mean? |
Do you have intimate knowledge of their grades, test scores, and ECs? Are you certain a grandparent didn't attend? A relative who is a trustee? |
Very likely if they are super smart then they have 1500+ sat and high gpa. But that’s a dime a dozen. Grandparents don’t count as legacy as far as I am aware. I commonly see one kid get lucky and get into HYPSM and the other(s) then go to Michigan or U chicago or other top school but not tippy top. The parents must be thrilled. |
Jeez. You must be early in your college journey. Hooked: URM, recruited athlete, celebrity, connect to university at highest level, super donor (eg named building level, not a few thousand), etc. |
Why are you jealous? |
ok I will play along... Because I want MY two super nice smart kid to get into HYPSM, duh. |

Does the acronym refer to Harvard Yale Princeton, etc?
Does anyone think we are weird to talk this way? |
