Colonoscopy prep & candy

Anonymous
So…. For people who have had a colonoscopy before - what did your doctor say about candy on your clear liquids day?

I see online that a LOT of practices say that hard candies are fine as long as they’re not blue or red. And a lot of them say gummy bears are also okay because gelatin dissolves quickly in your stomach.

The scheduler i just checked in with said NO candy. At all! Just liquids and jello.

So if i had any discipline or will power this would be no big deal, but I was planning to survive the day with lemon jolly ranchers and yellow gummy bears. Just wondering what other people were told or did. I could definitely just suck it up, but I’m hoping that dozens of people will say they are pounds of gummy bears the day before and were fine

I just had my colonoscopy last week. I didn't have any candy, but I did eat lots of jello. It give me the needed "mouth feel" so that I felt like I was eating something.

Ooh, I am prepping today and have my colonoscopy tomorrow. I have no answer to your question, just wanted to commiserate. It sucks!!!!!

I had a colonoscopy last year and ate a ton of yellow gummy bears with no problems. Also pineappple jello.

ok so I had a colonoscopy and ate the gummy bears. I also had the pills for the cleanse (versus the liquid). Either because the pills took FOREVER to get things moving, or because of the gummy bears, or both, my colonoscopy was deemed not fully successful for the right side of my colon. In essence, despite pooping clear before the procedure, I still had some poop in there which would prevent seeing small polyps. The doc wasn't particularly worried and said I could come back in three years and do an "extended prep" OR I could (on the day of the colonoscopy) do more cleansing and come back for more colonoscopy fun. I chose three years.

So. There's my anecdote.

I crushed gummy bears during my prep with no issue.

Adding that I ate the gummy bears the day before during my 2 part Suprep. After going to bed and waking up to do the second part, I had nothing. I got props from the doc on my good prep and rewarded myself with all the green and red gummy bears when I got home.

Geez, can’t you just follow the directions? Do you NEED candy that badly?

The directions on my recent one was that jolly ranchers were fine (except red and purple ones) no mention of gummy bears. But I had a lot of green apple jolly ranchers that day.

I’d just follow directions. You’ll be fine. (I ate a few peppermint lifesavers and werthers butterscotch hard candies, because my Dr said they were fine. But if she’d said “nothing”, I’d have done nothing.)

Hmm. I haven’t eaten anything yet today because I don’t usually eat breakfast anyway. I may need to sneak some gummy bears based on what I’m reading and it seems like jolly ranchers and werthers are OK too?

I know this is pathetic, but I am pretty weak on prior attempts to diet. To be honest, I’ve never made it a full 24 hours on any diet….

They didn't mention it either way, and I didn't have it. I'd be loathe to try something they didn't explicitly permit, just in case it caused a problem.

I did have lots of Jello, and did the Miralax prep with some kind of blue Gatorade. Alternating that with chicken broth really helped generally, since most of the stuff you're allowed ends up being so darn sweet. I think the salt of the chicken broth helped me not throw it all up, which I was very concerned about.

I chewed yellow and white candy and gumballs after drinking the Suprep to get that horrid taste out of my mouth. My instructions permitted candy but not anything red/blue or chocolate bars.

I had one last week and my suprep instruction says that hard candy is ok.

When I did my prep I was supposed to have a breakfast - egg and white toast. It certainly helped to get through the rest of the day. Did your prep not suggest breakfast?
