Colonoscopy prep & candy

Anonymous
Did anyone else’s colonoscopy prep say no vegetables and fruits a full week before the procedure? My husband says his said no fruits and stuff like nuts but mine says no fruits, vegetables or nuts (and or marmalade). Going without vegetables for a full week as well as fruit seems a bit extreme to me.

Honestly I can’t. One day out of 365 to make sure you won’t die.

I’ve had many colonoscopies (thanks cancer) and my strict directions that start 7 days prior allow “hard candy”.

I just had one in July and they said the only solid food was jello (clear or yellow). I'd recommend the yellow. I was already having stomach issues (hence the scope) so not eating for the day wasn't as difficult as I imagined lol.

Bone broth. Warm and cozy and filling. Totally allowed.

Instead of bone broth, I did the liquid from Wonton soup (I ordered a big container from a local restaurant and told them I just wanted the broth. It was very filling). I also had gummy bears. No complaints about my prep from the doctor and the colonoscopy was completed successfully.

Yes, bone broth, yellow jello, ginger ale, sprite - all have calories to help you keep going until "the purge."

Mmm, the wonton soup broth sounds delish.

OP here -

I had grand plans for a glorious day filled with all the glorious sugary drinks i don’t usually have - Pelegrín’s sodas, Lemonade slushies, maybe some fresh squeezed and strained juice…. It turns out that when you’re fasting, a little sugar goes along way and I had one tiny soda and a ton of werthrrs and a few gummy bears.

A couple notes so far - pho broth is also a great treat and Walmart brands pineapple jello is really quite good.

+1,000,000 Bone broth is what got me through the liquid diet day. I felt nourished. Jello made me feel icky.

I learned that having jello before a colonoscopy is fine, but it cannot be red or blue color (same with Gatorade) because they mimic the color of blood in the system.

I ate lifesavers hard candy. I sucked on it until it dissolved so I couldn’t see why it would be a problem. I didn’t ask for permission but read about it online. I considered gummy bears but was a little nervous.

I had some gummy bears as I was drinking the liquid and a couple hours later I threw them all up. They didn't dissolve - they were a blob of bear goo. And the prep was very slow to get started - I think they were clogging things up.

I recommend skipping the gummy bears.
