I'm looking to buy a new camera to replace on that was stolen and would love recommendations from other parents since all my pictures are of my two kids. I'm looking for a camera that can zoom and take pictures quickly (my old camera always seemed too slow to catch the kids' smiles or action shots.) My price range is $200-$300. I've done way too much research so far and since most of the commentary of the various photo/tech sites seems to come from serious photographers it only serves to make me more confused! BTW, one of the models I've been considering is a Panasonic ZS3 - if anyone has that, I'd love any feedback!

I want the same thing and I am also overwhelmed by the reviews, etc. out there. Also, we have previously had both a sony and a cannon and they both broke so I am hesitant about buying a new camera.

By far the best one for that price range - based on the recommendation of a photographer friend

We have both a Canon ELPH 1200is and a Canon ELPH 780is. I prefer the 780is because is better in low light conditions w/o flash (ASA 1200 equivalent for you techies). If that isn't a concern, then either one is quite nice.
I have a lumix tz5 that is pretty nice. Keep in mind that all compact point and shoots will have some shutter delay (but a DSLR will be probably around $400 and much larger).
Agree with this. We bought a Canon 1200is to replace an older Canon Elph in hopes that we could eliminate the delay in taking pictures of my 4 and 2 year olds. The pictures are OK, but there is still a delay and I still missed a lot of action shots. My husband bought me a Canon Rebel SLR and I LOVE it. It is big, but it takes great pictures even on the automatic setting. |
There's also a new compromise between DSLRs (which are large but take great pictures with no shutter lag), and compact P&S (which are smaller, and cheaper)-- they are called micro four-thirds (such as the lumix dmc-gf1). They take great pictures with a pretty fast shutter in a small size. Unfortunately, they are fairly expensive (and low light performance may be so-so).

I have a fuji XP which I love...It's waterproof to about 30 feet, so I have taken it snorkelling, etc...
