Hello
What are your kids learning in first grade math? I want to make sure my child is actually learning. All I’ve seen are some worksheets with addition, subtraction, and counting money. TIA it seems really basic. |

APS spends a lot of time on number sense and strategy for solving problems, so you won't see a lot of work for a while.
If you want reinforce at home, I'd add extra practice. I don't think they have the kids do enough problems to get fast and comfortable with math facts. The strategy piece seems to be covered pretty well at school. |

| What I would do at home in APS, when it is developmentally appropriate, is drill basic math facts. My kid still thinks about basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and he’s in middle school and he’s not the only one. They worry too much about understanding and strategies, rather than just drilling them to death on “what’s seven plus eight”. |

| The game Sleeping Queens is a good way to covertly practice math facts and is very popular with my kids. |

| Counting, money, math facts (adding and subtracting up to 20), groups of 10, making graphs. My kid is in 2nd grade now - but he really liked DreamBox for moving ahead at his own pace. |

| These are the first grade standards, and yes they seem easy for alot of kids. Ask the teacher about differentiation, Dream Box is an easy way for a teacher to do that |

| Early elementary math in APS is very basic. If your kid is interested, just supplement at home/teach him additional math. My youngest is in second grade, and they just started adding two 2-digit numbers. But not even any requiring carrying yet. My kids were always asking for more math, so we did/do more advanced stuff at home. |

| Google "Standards of Learning" on the Virginia Department of Education site and you can view the developmentally appropriate standards your child is learning in first grade math. |

| You will need to supplement with Kumon in APS if you want your student to get advanced math. We figured this out in 3rd grade and it made it so much better for my child who was so bored with basic concepts in APS |
