Weird question, but I'm curious when all you parents out there started solids. My mom thought it'd be cute to share my baby book milestones to compare with my baby now that he's 3 months old. I was shocked to see that she started me on cereal at 3.5 WEEKS, and solids (pureed fruits first) at 6 weeks! I'm 30, so maybe the "rules" were different in the 70's?
Interestingly, I'm now allergic to most of the first fruits I was given (apples, peaches, cherries) - though the allergy didn't show up until I was in high school and thankfully I'm only allergic to the raw fruits. Still, I'm going to play it safe with my son and not start him on solids 'til 6 months just in case it's more than coincidental! |

My DH was started on rice cereal (large amounts, I might add!) when he was a few days old, and lots of solids by the time he was six weeks. Thankfully he doesn't really have any allergies, but he does have weight issues.
The recommendations have DEFINITELY changed since the 1970's. Heck, back then they were telling moms that formula was better for babies than breastmilk! And the formula back then completely sucked compared to todays formulas. I don't know any parents from the 70's who waited to start solids until six months -- that was unheard of. |
| My mom was putting rice cereal in my bottle at night by the time I was a month old. She was shocked to learn that I won't be doing the same for my son. |

I was being pestered by my family, "is she on solid foods yet ?" when our DD was just two weeks old as well. Sheesh!
However, based on my ped recommendation (and DD's ravenous appetite) we did start her on rice cereal just before her 4 month birthday. I was concerned about the allergy thing too, but he said that if we *only* did rice cereal until 6 months, we should be okay. |
| I'm 35 and my brother is 24. We both started solids (rice and/or wheat cereal type stuff) in our third month. I'm planning to start solids for my son around the same time. Maybe at 4 months. |
| Such a funny posting because my mom does this all the time. She's constantly saying things like "I had you and your brother off of formula and on skim milk (skim milk??) when you were 6 months old and eating solids, including pureed meats at just a few months old! When are you going to switch to milk?" I'm 32. I have no idea what the big rush was back then! |
| My mother told me that they started giving me cereal in a bottle at two weeks old, this was 1978...it's crazy how much things have changed... |

I'm pretty sure I was eating pizza by the time I was a month.
I can't visit my mother without her putting something in my DS's hands every time I turn my back. Forturnately, it is just things like crackers and bananas but still, I was shocked to see him shoving a whole banana into his mouth! (she does get it though about the allergies and does not pressure us too much but I also know many peopel that have fruit and nut allergies as adults and can trace it back to starting them at a young age. My siblings and I are very, very lucky!) |
| Oh, and we started DS on prunes and rice cereal at 4 mos. |
| I was started on solids at 3 months. The first pediatrician whom my mom say said: "Lady, it's not the prehistoric ages, the objective is to get the baby to eat steak and French fries asap." She changed pediatrician. |

There is a picture of me at 6 months trying to shove a whole sausage in my mouth. I was eating solids from about 2 months. Was born in 79. No allergies to speak of. Are allergies the reason for the 6 month rule? A friend who has a seven year old said that when her DS was born her doctor told her 4 months...
