Is it possible to request a teacher for K?

Anonymous
My son's K registration is next week and I was wondering if anyone has requested a teacher for K (or any other grade)? I don't mean a specific teacher as I don't know any of them but a certain "type" of teacher. My son's pre-K teacher probably isn't a good match for him. She is very sweet and doesn't impose any kind of consequences on his behavior. She will often talk to him about it but no action is taken and he knows it. He is very bright academically and is way ahead of his peers but will get away with whatever he is allowed to. He behaves well for me and for his teacher last year who was much more "no nonsense" with him (I am too). He is starting K in the fall in a charter school so I don't know any of the teachers but I wonder if anyone has asked for a strict teacher or a no nonsense teacher? He needs it and he responds to it well.

In our MoCo kindergarten registration materials, we received a list of questions to answer our about the incoming student for just this purpose. (They use the same form in later years, too.) If you don't receive a form like this, I'd ask the school if there is a way to share information about your son's "learning style."

At our MCPS parents do get fill out a questionaire that asks about how you think your child learns best, and things like that. I think the school would not particularly appreciate it if you requested a specific teacher, but I think it would be fine if you wrote something like you did in your post about the style that you think would be best and why, based on past experience.

sure.... just be careful not to come off as high maintenance and entitled.

Wouldn't it be more effective to meet with the principal and talk about your kid and simply say "he does better in a no-nonsense environment" rather than "you should do the following"?

OP here. All I want to do is tell them what my son is like but I guess I'll have to wait and see if they have parents fill out a form on registration day about our child. They didn't include it with all of the other forms I have to bring with me filled out. If I were high maintenance, I would've asked that my son be put in another class this year when I saw things weren't working out. If they don't give us the opportunity to share this info at K registration, I will ask to meet with the admin. Thanks!

At our MCPS kindergarten orientation, the teachers actually are supposed to take the child to meet with the child while we meet with the administrators. I think this is for this assessment purpose. Call the school and ask about how they assignn a child to a classroom/teacher. I am not sure how I'd describe howmy 5 y.o. learns best.

Yes, they said they do an informal assessment on students during this registration. But they aren't going to see what my son is like from that. He reads at a first/second grade level and can easily do all of the things they will ask him to do (write his name, count, letters, etc). But they won't see how he acts in a classroom and that is what I want them to know about. One on one, he is quite charming and easy going. I think they said while he is with the K teacher, I will meet w/ the guidance counselor so maybe I'll talk to her about classroom placement.

OP, I think your best bet is with the principal, although you can certainly speak with the guidance counselor as well.

Yes, you can share your insights about your child, and request a certain type of teacher. Your request might not be honored, but then again it might. You have in my opinion a perfectly legitimate request. You aren't trying to avoid a "bad" or less qualified teacher. Plenty of parents would request the sweet, creative teacher who maybe isn't as strict. Here are a few places to look for wording:
