Anonymous
We will be posting same message for various schools that DD is interested in …

DD is interested in U Texas Austin for business studies … DD aims for well paying work in business or real estate, likes warm weather, sufficient Latino and minority presence, and performing arts … any feedback about the school?

Thank you in advance …

Getting in out of state is very hard much less into McCombs.

I am an alum and my ds got in but he's not sure if he's going. It is a great school but also sink or swim. And it is in Texas which is turning into Gilead.

Like the PP said (and another Texan here) going doesn’t guarantee success. In fact many of my peers who went there are all burned out bar tenders/ servers or hobby artists living in Austin still. Yes, some of my friends are successful but only one and two are truly impressive by DCUM standards. It’s a huge school and you have to fight for what you want I.e good classes, attention/ aide from professors, etc. Your daughter needs to be highly driven and almost pushy to be noticed.

Longhorn alum here. I didn't do business, but UT has a big business school. There's a business honors program too. UT is huge so you can really study anything you want, join any organization, there are lots of recruiters for internships etc -- there are a lot of opportunities IF you're a self-starter. Being in an honors program or some other smaller cohort program helps. There is a big Greek scene but since it's such a big school there's a big non-Greek scene, too -- I only had one friend who was in a sorority. I loved Austin. The city is so much fun and the food is amazing. Getting in out of state can be tough though because the top 6% of grads from any any HS in Texas are automatically admitted. Best of luck to your DD!

Mine got into their business honors program but ended up doing statistics and economics at an Ivy and then going for an MBA at Stanford. Many of his high school friends did the opposite and now they say he made a better decision. Most of them got good jobs after undergrad but didn’t get direct admission to top business schools until they had some experience and most didn’t enjoy their undergrad education.

UT has changed quite a bit, super competitive OOS due to 6% auto admit. Admission stats do not reflect competitiveness for non residents. It is now very hard to get into any non Liberal Arts major. Like single digits admissions hard.

Picking schools based on politics. Very open minded! Defiantly will grow if selects an echo chamber instead

Long live Gilead. Misa like Gilead. Hopefully those who don't will leave and let us be. We don't want crazy liberals coming down here and bringing their failed big city policies to Texas

OP here - thank you so much. Good reality check for her.

Austin sounds like a great city for the young especially. We will visit but it is good to tamper expectations.

Op here - sorry to have dim head lights but WDYM by Gilead?

Gilead was an area east of the Jordan River famous for a healing balm. One of my fave hymns is “There is a balm in Gilead” but I have no idea what you mean by Texas is becoming Gilead.

Thanks!

Tsk, Tsk. You clearly are not in the liberal bubble that is having rage and org**m* at the same time while watching Handmaid's Tale. Anyplace that is pro guns, pro life and pro God is Gilead for coastal elite. On the other hand any place where you can steal anything under $500 and not get prosecuted, with high cringe and aggressive panhandling on the streets is Eden

Thanks for the heads up.

I am not sure how much of a self starter she is in the way that I think of it. However she is Very Gen Z in so many ways, so she probably is very entrepreneurial in Gen Z ways (social media etc). I’ll warn her that she would need to be very self directed to consider it seriously.

Thanks!

Ok thank you … I actually do live in some kind of bubble (very low crime but happily there are neighbors on all sides of the political spectrum but we try to keep things neighborly and not too political).

I tried to watch that show once, and like the author, but i could not stomach the violence (the birther women having eyes gouged out for impudence).

I think I’ll stick to my favorite hymn association for Gilead … and national parks for Eden.

We have only heard good things about Austin!
