I love the look of linen (or other soft fabric) roman shades in the kitchen, but are they practical? Specifically for the window above the sink and windows near the stove, what if you splashed water or grease on the fabric?
If you have fabric roman shades in those areas, would you please share your experience? And if you have other suggestions on kitchen window treatment please share! TIA. |
They will get soiled. |
I have a thick linen Roman shade over my sink window. It can close all the way, but I have it up about 1/2 way. The window is probably 3’ tall. I’ve had it 10 years and it hasn’t been soiled. |
Thanks! So the key is to have it up 1/2 way? I love the look of a roman shade closed only half the way, but for privacy I might have to close it all the way once it gets dark outside. - OP |
DP. How tall is your window? If it’s on the shorter side, you could do a high-mounted roman well above the window that’s long enough to cover the full window but when dropped halfway comes just below the top of the window. It would give the half-closed look (and give your window the appearance of being bigger) while keeping the fabric well clear of sink splashes when it is half closed. |
Window is very tall so I could mount the roman shades just inside the frame and have it hang 1/2 way. But at night I would need to shut it all the way. I can't think of other options for kitchen, I don't want to install shutters, that leaves roman shades the only other option, pretty much. - OP |
I guess it depends on what your window looks out to and how low the window goes. Our window doesn’t start until about 6” up from the counter. We do look out to our neighbor’s deck. It is kind of awkward, but I just Avert my eyes. |
They can be dry cleaned. Usually I prefer a washable fabric to something that’s coated, but this might be a good application for crypton. You probably should do black out lining to protect it and idk if crypton has any yellowing or other problems from the sun. |
NP. I also have one above my sink window. I keep it 1/3 closed all the time. It is never completely down. It works for our yard because we have woods behind us but, obviously, if you have privacy concerns it's not great. It still looks great but it's simply decorative at this point, not functional. |
We have fabric shades on the wall opposite our stove and they still get dirty. Thankfully, they are super easy to spot clean. I give them a once over with laundry soapy water twice a year. |
I’ve had one over my sink for ten years with no issues! |
I have wood blinds on my sink window. I don't love them (would prefer a shade) but they wipe clean. |
This is what we do and this window looks right onto next door neighbor's house and we've just grown to ignore it! |
We had Roman style shades in a solar shade material (2 windows above sinks so…) |
We have a roman shade in a fantastic fabric with a tape trim that I love and makes the kitchen so warm and finished. We do keep it 1/3 down at all times, no splatters or splashes get near it. bUt faces the side of my house, nothing that interesting of my neighbor's house bc with a little row of hedges between. |
