Which schools are most progressive?

| The self-identified progressive schools are Burgundy Farm, Capitol Hill, Green Acres, Lowell and Sheridan. Georgetown Day School was established as a progressive school though does not belong to the progressive schools network. Many of the traditional independent schools not identified as progressive have elements of progressive education in their kindergartens and lower grades. Education for democracy, developmentally appropriate lessons and meaningful curriculum are found in many schools. Think about what is you want for your kid and look for it in the schools you are considering. There’s never one answer. |

| You need to clarify what you mean by progressive. It's a specific educational doctrine (membership in a specific organization, mission statement, etc.), a colloquial educational term (emphasis on developmentally appropriate practice, lots of music/art/recess, social emotional curriculum, etc.) , and of course a political identity as expressed in school (LGBTQ awareness/education, racial diversity education, etc.). Different schools are "most progressive" depending on which definition you're using. |

K you say? Montessori is progressive; can go as fast or slow in student driven math, phonics/reading, science, daily skills. Very child directed though for k-4 will be at state standards or above. Waldorf is play/nature based progressive for several years. Gds K is play based, no reading groups or homework etc all play based learning and heavy on integrating its social studies throughout its lower school subjects. |

Holton and Stone Ridge seemed very teacher directed to me, which is the opposite of my understanding of progressive education. Holton also doesn't start at K. |

| Montessori is not progressive. Montessori is Montessori. It’s its own thing. Sometimes it is well-implemented. Sometimes it is not. |

It’s teaching method maybe traditional but all of the ideas, thoughts and curriculum coming out of that school are very, very progressive. |
