Snow days and telework

Anonymous
Since we are all telework (or the majority of us are) our offices require us to continue working even though there is a federal snow day. That is fine, I understand the concept since we technically have the ability to work from home. What I don't know is how to work and take care of my kids. Right now I have done 30 minutes of work and am trying to catch up with a few emails while the baby naps. My older 2 are outside playing but I am not sure how long I can leave them since they are roaming the neighborhood. They are only 5 and 6 so I don't think they can stay out too long.

What is everybody else doing? My DH works as well and doesn't have any flexibility. Not to mention that we were all off for the past 2 weeks and I have a ton of things that I needed to catch up on today.

Plop them in front of the tv. Disney plus for all!

How did you manage from March 2020 to September 2021?

Take a day or part of the day off, OP.

We hired a babysitter so I can work.

Some federal agencies have a policy that authorizes administrative leave if the weather event that forced telework also interfered with dependent-care arrangements at the alternate worksite (aka your home). You have to request it from your supervisor though.

I take annual leave.

I keep up in emails to look like I am working but don’t do anything. I am not wasting precious leave on days where I didn’t choose to have the kids home.

Email traffic at my agency goes down by 90% on snow days so I am not the only one.

Once I didn’t have a baby, I pay a middle schooler to hang out with them and keep them alive for a few hours.

Op here - I was on maternity Leave and then the kids went back in July 2021 to daycare.

I take the day off, switch off with my spouse, or work intermittently and do a crap job.

Today, I took off. I want to enjoy the snow day with my kid.

Good question. What did you do, OP? I worked before the kids woke up, during their nap, and then after they went to sleep. We're on maxiflex so we can put in our hours at any time of day.

I'm flexing as much as I can. I might have to flex later in the week too. But otherwise I guess we burn leave. It definitely sucks, but that's just the tradeoff.

You don’t have a 5 and 6 year old roam outside. What is wrong with you?
