I’ve been growing out a short cut and a dye job basically the entire pandemic, and am ready for a new cut. I’ve started wearing my hair in it’s natural waves/curls and think a shag would work well with the texture, but I’m a bit nervous because if prior bad experiences with layers (back when I didn’t know how to care for my hair and was constantly drying/straightening) so I want someone who really knows what they are doing.
Anyone have a recommendation for someone great with wavy/curly hair who knows how to do layers well? Would especially love to hear from anyone with a proper shag cut who likes who cut it and/or maintains it. TIA! |
Ugh don’t do it. |
I have thick wavy hair, and I like my mid-length shag. It’s essentially wash and wear, and my hair is so healthy because I don’t use heat on it anymore (also, because I stopped coloring in Feb 2020).
Honestly, it’s such a forgiving cut that I just get mine done at the beauty shop in my neighborhood strip mall. I don’t let the stylist use a razor or thinning shears. It frays my hair and creates damage and frizz. |
I don’t have a specific stylist recommendation right now, but I have learned to always avoid anyone who says they “love” working with curls — unless they have specific certification and training (eg, DevaCurl or Ouidad). They’ll do something stupid like use razors which will kill your ends or give you a triangle. |
^^ go see anyone at Oasis in Rockville or Fiddlehead in DC. Either will give you a great curly/wavy cut. And either will teach you how to manage the cut.
For me, never layers, as it just would end up big and bushy, but perhaps my waves are wavier than yours. Ask your cuy girl stylist |
Thank you! Just what I needed. My waves are weird because they don’t really start until around my chin (except for some s-curve body, but no real defined waves) but then below my ears some of them actually start to coil. It’s a challenging texture which is why I straightened or wore it short for so long. But I e learned a lot more about my texture in the last year and I’m starting to think a layered cut by someone who really gets my hair would be ideal— create more even texture throughout by removing some of the weight that kind of straightens out my roots. That’s the theory, anyway. I’m nervous about it but think it’s worth a try! |
Bumping this up for a recommendation in VA?
I have hair that sounds very much like the OP's. |
Trim DC, on Ontario Rd., specializes in shag cuts and wavy/curly hair. I've been really impressed by their cuts. |
Jenny B at Kindle and Boom. I have a very slight wave- so slight that at certain lengths is not noticeable. I alternate between a shag cut, layers, and longer "wolf cut" styles lately. She isn't afraid of European styling techniques like dry cuts and razor cuts but you have to ask if that is what you want. |
Senses.DC in ParkView is a great option. |
Get a curly/ deva haircut (with dry hair). They will cut layers that work for your curl pattern. |
Come on, name names people. No just the salon name. We need the names of the best stylists. |
I got the single best cut on my shortish wavy hair by Ashley at immortal beloved (now closed). She posts her availability on ig ashleythehairdresser but cuts in a place in Shaw. |
A shag like Mrs Brady or Rachel on Friends? |
