| This holiday baking season has finally brought me to the end of my current bottle of vanilla. What would you recommend for my next vanilla? I don't bake a lot but I do make some vanilla-forward desserts and I don't mind paying for something really nice. Thanks! |
| I have a bottle from Penzey’s and one from Costco and there’s not much difference. |
| Vanilla bean paste. You won’t regret it. |
| I used to work at Williams Sonoma, and this brand was always popular - https://www.williams-sonoma.com/m/products/nielsen-massey-vanilla-extract |
Agree this brand is best. But I like the Mexican vanilla best https://www.williams-sonoma.com/m/products/mexican-pure-vanilla-extract/?pkey=s~mexican%20vanilla~3&sbkey=default |
Most of them have a lot of added sugar |
| Make your own like Ina https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/vanilla-extract-recipe-1941109.amp |
I think I remember reading something fairly recently about how the commercial extraction process is something one can't replicate at home. Ah, here: https://lifehacker.com/why-you-shouldnt-make-your-own-vanilla-extract-1847989961 - OP |
Ooh, my last one was the Madagascar but I haven't tried the Mexican. Also a good excuse to order a few more things I don't need from WS... |
| I like Penzeys. |
| The industrial bottle from Costco is great. |
| Do they really taste different? I use giant brand. |
Yep, the Costco brand is really good |
|
Diy
Vanilla bean in vodka Google it. Easy to make and works out much cheaper |
| I use Nielsen Massey vanilla paste when I want vanilla to shine (e.g. vanilla buttercream), Penzey's or Costco for general baking. We've also made our own vanilla extract and preferred the one made with bourbon over the one made using vodka. |
