Infant clothes for DC summer?

Anonymous
I am a first-time mom trying to build my registry and figure out the essentials I'll need for the first few months. It seems like most of the infant clothes are long-sleeved or even long sleeves and pants. I know babies need to be kept warm, but will that be too hot for summer in DC? Should I try to get only short-sleeved onesies and then transition into warmer clothes in the fall?

Infants overheat quite easily. I think my son basically lived in a onesie during the summer when he was 5-8 months old.

I second the sleeveless onesie suggestion. It’s okay for infanta to go sleeveless during DC summers; they not working on the Hill, after all.

OP here - thanks! Any favorite brands?

Mine wore onesies with no pants all summer. Primarily from Carters and Baby Gap.

Carters, costco has nice sets. Target too. Kids go through tons of clothing their first two years. Don't overspent. Ask for 0-12 month clothing.

Don’t buy too much stuff now. My kid was born in November and in 18 months clothes by July.

My spring and summer babies hung out in short sleeved onesies and no pants, with a light muslin blanket for sun protection as needed. Summer stuff is probably just not as available right now.

Now is actually a great time to search for summer clothes as some are seriously discounted. I scored Baby Boden pieces for $5 this time 2 years ago for my summer baby. Search sale sections of stores like Baby Gap and Old Navy for onesies. You may want a couple footed ones for sleep but otherwise the short sleeved ones are all you need.

At that age my baby lived in Carter’s onesies all summer long. I had 2-3?nice sets of clothes for pictures but I didn’t bother buying the nicer brands till she was older and not growing out of everything in a week.

I had a June baby and baby wore long sleeves and long pants or sleepers for the first month. Brand new babies don’t regulate their own temperatures very well and I had serious postpartum sweats so we had the AC on for me. Then after that we tended to wear long sleeves for sun protection since babies under 6 months aren’t supposed to wear sunscreen.

Will your baby be a newborn in the summer? I had a July baby and thought it was hot AF outside, we kept our house pretty cool so still put him in longsleeve bodysuits and pjs. So I guess it depends on how often you think you’ll be outside with a newborn (we really didn’t want him to get eaten alive by mosquitos so weren’t outside much more than a walk or two a day until September when it cooled down) and how cool you keep your house in the summer. If an older baby by summer, yeah i agree don’t put too much stuff on past 0-3 months bc you don’t know how quickly your kid will grow.

Consider whether they'll be in air conditioning inside or being taken around outside. Keep in mind they get SUPER sweaty in a sling in the summer. We are not heat and humidity people and don't spend much time outdoors in the summer. So a short-sleeve onesie and pants was perfect for a newborn in an air-conditioned home.
