Teens and White Claws - Alcohol content?

Anonymous
Found out my teen had a few White Claws last night at a small NYE gathering at a friends house. They were outside, so the parents didn’t notice apparently that one of the teens brought White Claws that her college age brother had bought for them. DDs first time drinking the stuff and I’ve never had it. How much alcohol is these hard seltzers? Equivalent to how many beers? TIA

8% alcohol, White Claw® Hard Seltzer Surge

I don’t know the exact equivalent but I’ve had them here and there in the past. I would think of them as roughly the same as having a few wine coolers. Yes, alcoholic. Very popular among teens in the last few years. Not terribly high alcohol content although enough of them for a kid who’s never had a drink before could certainly produce an effect.

About 5%. Same as a bud light.

8% is a high alcohol content and much higher than commercial beers. 8% is comparable to craft beers/IPAs that pack a good punch.

That’s the “Surge” line. Regular WhiteClaw 5% so about the same as a beer. Impact depends on many factors obviously not the least of which is how many kid has.

They taste better than wine coolers, so easy for teens to get carried away.

Wine coolers average 6.

It’s definitely 5%. DH and I like them and say we are now light weights. They remind us of Zima, that we had at parties when we were young.

OP here. Thanks for all the info!

IMO, "parents didn't apparently notice" = parents deliberately choose to look the other way, probably because they want to be the cool parents who don't say no. Personally, I wouldn't let my kid go other to that house anymore, but YMMV.

This. I am fine with parents deciding to let their own teen try a drink under supervision so it is not the forbidden fruit and they can observe how the teen handles 1 serving, but that is different from teens sneaking alcohol while parents are home. They should have been checking in. Boundaries are important.
