restricting food for a 10-month old?

have a friend that restricts their son's food consumption because 'he doesn't stop and will keep eating.' mealtimes are always followed by a meltdown because he's obviously still hungry and showing hunger cues.

can babies even overeat at this stage? i feel bad but don't want to mom shame/put my head where it doesn't belong. the worst part is he just kind of sits around most of the time and i partly feel it's because he's hungry and doesn't have the added energy from a full belly.

is this normal? thoughts?

That’s awful and she has some misguided notions about feeding children. Does she suffer from disordered eating herself?

At most I would make attempts to slow the pace of the meals down so that the babe has time to get the message they are full, or if there has been issues of them eating too much too fast and vomiting. Otherwise feed until they indicate they are no longer hungry. Could be a growth spurt.

That's sad, but I don't know what you can do about it if she didn't ask you for advice.

It's a possibility her son has reflux. I have a friend whose son kept eating and eating to soothe his reflux and then would throw it up.

I guess just hope your friend has discussed this with her pediatrician and gotten good advice.

That is horrible!

If you think your friend is starving her baby you need to contact CPS. Do you know who her doctor is? If you don't want to go nuclear maybe tell them what you are seeing in case there is a medical explanation?

Wow, that's horrible. Sounds like the mom has disordered eating. I'm in a moms group and one mom who is very weight obsessed about herself said something about her kid eating too much. All of our children are 6 mo -1.5yo. We all told her how kids that age eat what they need and it's our job to just provide healthy choices and let them eat their fill. We also gave examples of meals our kids eat and it seemed to help. Have you talked to this mom? I also agree that maybe you should call CPS if the kid seems listless. I feel sorry for that baby.

I have an older baby who has always been 99+ percentiles for height and weight, literally not on the charts. He doesn't stop eating. There is no full to him. Not saying that's what's going on here but I would leave this to the ped.
