I second Baked & Wired. Personally can’t stand coconut but other cakes are delicious.

DH got me a great birthday cake from Savvy Treats in Rockville.

I had a great birthday cake from MilkBar this year. I was surprised how good it was.

If you want fancy then Praline has excellent cakes (but they aren't traditional birthday cakes).

Tout de Sweet in Bethesda makes the most delicious cakes I've ever tasted, bar none. It is a small shop, with irregular hours during the holidays, so may not be able to accommodate if you need it soon since they require some advance notice.

Correct. As a fellow French person, the chef is good. Some of his individual cakes are to die for. It’s been a while since we ordered large cakes, but we were never disappointed.

Tout de Sweet. (Black Forest with fresh raspberry is my fave).

Tried Baked & Wire one year. Loved their cupcakes but the (gigantic cupcake-shaped) birthday cake I ordered was a dud. Not sure if that format (vs layer cake) still exists, so YMMV.

That said, TdS has better cupcakes than B&W, so I’d have recommended it even if I hadn’t had the bad-giant-cupcake-birthday-cake experience.

Haven’t done conventional birthday cakes at Praline (Bethesda) or Poupon (Georgetown), but both make very good cakes (e.g. Fraisier, Opera, Bûche).

+1. If you’re willing to go to Alexandria, I love the cakes from Bittersweet.
