Where to buy masa

Anonymous
Do you know where I can buy prepared masa for tamales in the dmv? Meaning already mixed in a bag? TIA!

You can buy masa harina at most regular grocery stores, but it’s not right for tamales. It’s really easy to make yourself with dried corn, baking soda, and a blender, just takes a couple hours.

Thanks but that’s not what I’m looking for. At a lot of the Mexican supermarkets in California where I’m from you can buy it premixed in the bakery/deli area. That’s the stuff I’m looking for!

I’m from California too. Make it yourself. I’ve never seen prepared tamale dough here.

I’ve been to a handful of Latin stores around here but never seen it prepared

Moctec in hyattsville, md is the only place in the area that I know of to get masa preparada. I have not been there in years. It used to be you went to the factory and they would sell it to you, there wasn't a retail storefront. I believe the owner, Victor Vazquez, died in 2008ish, but, his family has kept the business going. This is the website. https://moctec.net/index.html I would call to find out if you can still buy masa preparada from their factory.

I'm from Texas and also miss being able to buy it. Anybody who tells you to make your own from masa harina hasn't had masa prerada made from whole corn kernels.

Giant has it. White bag with green letters.
In a pinch, I substitute with corn meal. I've made tomales with them.

Op here. You’re saying the have the premixed version with lard/oil? Or just Maseca flour in the dry goods area with other flours?

OP here. I tried calling just now and they are closed this week due to Covid. My tamale dreams are slipping away…
