My dh and our friend have a long-standing joke based on the “better” babka. This friend and her family just suffered an unimaginable tragedy. Dh said he had to bring a babka to the shiva. We don’t live in an area with a lot of bakeries so I picked up a Trader Joe’s chocolate babka. It made our friend smile. I dropped something off at their house yesterday and she said someone sent them babka from Zabar’s and it is clearly the better babka. So, is there a chocolate babka that is better than Zabar’s? Trying to do all we can to distract this family during this terrible time… |
Oneg Bakery? No personal experience, just looked on Goldbelly. |

Breads Bakery in NYC has the best I've ever had, but I don't know if they ship. |
Second this one. Have had it at their bakery in Brooklyn and it is the best |
Don’t forget cinnamon!!

You think the better babka comes from... Michigan? You must be from Michigan. |
I think this is who we used when we bought online.

Breads is ours favorite! I even had one for my birthday cake. |
This one is really good if it's the one I'm remembering from East Coast corner stores! In DC - I feel like that market next to the Pan Asian place on Connecticut Ave carried Green's Chocolate Babka when I lived there a few years ago. That strip with the old Lobster Shack / tchotchkes shop / ice cream sandwich store, across Connecticut from Marco's Lebanese takeout. |
I think Trader Joe's babka is actually from (or slightly tweaked from?) Green's. |
I'd love to find a poppyseed babka, especially with a dash of good liquor added. |
No cinnamon! It must be chocolate bc chocolate is the better babka lol! |
I think they sell this at my WF. Tbh, it didn’t look that appetizing which is why I got them TJ’s originally. This is op. |
They do sometimes have this at the Silver Spring’s WF. |
