Preschool masks outside- MOCO

Anonymous
Our preschool dropped out door masks this summer and we just got an email saying they are going to start requiring masks outside again. Is this a DOH thing or just our school? We are pretty frustrated they are doing this for 3 year olds who eat two snacks, lunch and do rest time unmasked indoors. We are in MOCO

Ours has been in masks th whole time. I have a 3yo in Bethesda.

Huh? How else would they eat and nap? Why are you even mentioning that? I would be frustrated if they weren’t masked outdoors. Most places are…

I'm this PP and I misread OP. Ours doesn't do masks outside. That does seem like a bummer and gratuitous to me too.

Masks outside for kids is absurd. Covid theater.

Our preschool never stopped masking outside. The kids have a snack and lunch inside which does make it seem silly but I think it’s because their small class shares the yards with other classes while meals are just with their class.

This is OP - if it’s just our place I will probably gently ask that they reconsider. My older child wears her mask fine but my younger one really struggles with it and did a lot better once he got a long break outside. Seemed to help him play better withers other kids- he has a significant lisp still and is hard to understand in the mask, even for me. I just don’t see the point for 3 year olds who have way more exposure other times of the day.

I work at a preschool and the kids wear them outside because they don’t even realize they’re on. They’re allowed to take them off if they want but probably 99% don’t. Also, parents complain that we ask for too many masks to be kept at school and every time a mask comes off (like for snack) a new one has to be out on so they won’t be handling a dirty mask and so it can be washed. Making them take off masks for the playground would mean more masks needed.

They do not share playground space with other classes at our place.

That is not the case for my kids. Not even close. He constantly asks to take it off, even with us. We have never complained about the number of masks, but they change after meals etc so I don’t see how that would matter (they go out after snack).

By the way I know kids like this, so I know what you mean. It just does really bother mine.

This is beyond stupid. When your nose gets wet from running because you're outside in the cold the snot is going to rub off on the mask and will collect any aerosols it encounters. Totally stupid.

It's not silly. They almost certainly have assigned seats and assigned nap spots, so they know which kids are within 6 feet. Outside, hopefully the kids play freely and a maskless kid can expose a whole class, possibly multiple classes.

Also, the "it's too hot in masks" argument does not apply in December and the "we have data that outside is safe" doesn't apply because omicron is a whole new thing.

I did not know of any preschools in Montgomery County that were requiring masks outside this fall. I think because MCPS was not most places felt it would be ridiculous to make younger kids do it. I’m sure some places were, but I don’t think it was a majority.

They do have assigned seats but the kids wiggle around and go to the bathroom and stuff. He’s had plenty of colds this fall; if this thing is as transmissible as they say it’s going to get every kid in the classroom.

Agree masks are MORE problematic outside in the summer but for a kid who drools they are pretty unpleasant in the cold too.
