Please recommend your rice cooker

I started looking online at rice cookers and got overwhelmed by the number of options. I just need something simple that works well and is reasonably priced, easy to clean, and programmable so I can set it in the morning. I don't need it to do a lot of other things - just make white, brown and jasmine rice.

ditto! The programmable (delayed start) is key for me, too.

And we are a family of three, so I'd prefer a smaller capacity.

So far I've found:

and

would love to hear other suggestions!

Zojirushi is the go-to brand in Japan. Not all of them are made in Japan these days, though. Nonetheless, the quality is good, and the programmable ones are pretty straightforward. You can find them on sale at Amazon frequently. We have a family of 3 (and we are small eaters with a small kitchen) so we went with a 3-cup one.

I have the first one on here and it works great. I love the programable feature!

What is the real advantage to a rice cooker? I eat a lot of rice, and although it can require a little planning ahead, I don't have a problem using a regular pot. But, I know that many cook books recommend a rice cooker so am wondering what I am missing out on.

you don't have to watch it and can get other things done while the rice cooks without burning.

It is a time-saver - I can make better rice in a regular pan, but I have to watch it. The rice cooker doesn't burn the rice, even if ignored. I can get other stuff done, and the alarm lets me know when the rice is ready.

I'm the second poster. I am considering one b/c ideally dinner is on the table no more than 30 minutes after I walk in the door at night (we both WOH). That means fresh brown or wild rice is out of the question. I could make a large batch, freeze and reheat, but that is highly unlikely to happen. And it bothers me to buy the frozen rice at such a markup, even though I could buy a lot of frozen rice bags for the cost of a rice cooker.

Aroma brand is good - I have one that I bought at Costco years ago and it works like a charm. And we use it a lot! When our Asian family comes for long visits it's used twice a day.

I like the "warm" feature - it keeps the rice warm for a long time - people can keep going back for more (big family-style dinners!).

Zojirushi is the best brand.

You can also steam veggies, dumplings, etc in a rice cooker. Even for a family of 3, I recommend a 5 cup if you have the space. It is more useful.

I have the National (Panasonic) brand and used for over 25 yrs. I've only had to replace the lid since I broke the glass.

Can the rice just sit in the cooker most of the day? That is, you make it in the morning, go to work, and come home to it? What if it's brown rice made with chicken broth?
