IVF - # of follicles that actually become an egg

Anonymous
Hello - Just wondering the ratio of follicles seen while monitoring for IVF (on stims) versus the number that are actually retrieved and are eggs. I had 16 follicles seen at day 4 of stims, is it safe to assume most of those will become eggs, or is it a fraction of that number? What has your experience been?

TIA!

Do you have PCOS?

No.

I had a lot of follicles, so they never really got a good count, but my sense is that most of my follicles produced eggs (they retrieved 25). Best of luck to you.

thanks PP! Did the number of follicles increase as you were monitored, or did the day 4 number stay the same throughout and your follicles just kept getting bigger?

The number of follicles can go up and down during the stim part of your cycles. Also, not all follicles always have eggs. Honestly, even though it is really, really hard I would try to not get so caught up in the numbers at this point. You have enough follicles that you're not in danger of getting cancelled. Other than that, focusing on the number of follciles is just going to cause unnecessary stress. I know it's hard to not get totally focused on all this stuff, but having seen a lot of friends go through multiple cycles, I think it's better not to get so hung up on the details at this point. Good luck with your cycle!!!!!

"Do you have PCOS?"

I asked because some women with PCOS get a lot of follies but not many mature eggs out of them. Since you don't have it, I agree with the others that you have a good chance of getting a good number of mature eggs. As long as you get around 12, and you don't have fertilization problems, you should be in good shape.

OP here. Thanks for the advice! I was told these were good numbers, so I'm not too worried, just wasn't sure how things progress from here so that is why I asked. I appreciate the feedback!
