We want to hire a babysitter we've used in the past to be our part-time nanny. She's watched my kids 4 times and they really like her. She has also watched my friend's children several times, AND she lives down the street from my friend, who also knows her mother.
I feel like I'm supposed to have a background check on file for a nanny. However, I've heard (mostly on dcum) that most online background checks are unreliable and turn up lots of false info. And it seems like overkill in this situation to have her do a fingerprint background check. Thoughts? |
Just check her driving record if she’s going to drive your kids. |
Yes, but at a minimum I'd go on your court search and see if there is anything to start with. Some areas offer free online court searches and google her name. |
Yes I would, and it goes both ways. When I watched kids I did background checks on my parents. There's the criminal court, family, civil, and justice which you can do online case searches.

I did a Google deep-dive on my former nanny, but really, I trusted my gut over anything else. I would call references if you're wanting to be extra cautious.
The pervert teacher I had in high school had a clean criminal record, fwiw. I'm not paranoid, but background checks are of limited effectiveness. Trust your gut. Checking driving record is understandable if she will be driving on the job -- I've known normal-seeming people who've had double-digit numbers of speeding tickets, DUIs etc. |
No they can be very revealing. Don't tell someone to trust their gut, omg! You do it on people who will be around your family, or someone you're thinking about dating. |
