ski or snowboarding for a soccer boy

DS is 13 and is a solid MLSNext player, we are trying to broaden his interest and suggested maybe ski or snowboard for winter break fun. He thinks it might be too risky for his soccer since he is new to ski or snowboard.

any thoughts from parents on how you would deal with this situation?

guards for snowboarding.

I'd keep him away from the slopes mainly because of the idiots who might crash into him.

Tell him he's a big p***y?

As the parent of a soccer player who loves to snowboard, I'd nudge him towards a cheaper interest.

But if it comes down to one or the other, and he isn't expressing a preference, I'd say that skiing is not as steep a learning curve. I can take a kid skiing and after a couple times they can ski a wide variety of slopes with me. Snowboarding takes longer. So, I'd probably pick skiing if I was hoping to make it stick for a reluctant kid since you get to fun faster.

My kids play at that level and went whizzing down the mountain (skis) at Big Sky after a 20 min lesson. I’m the only chicken on the slopes in my family (fear of death, torn knees, etc)

OP here - thanks all. I guess the chance of breaking a leg is not huge, with the right slope and protective equipment

Skiing takes forever to get good at. Snowboarding all the way.

Snowboarding is no more dangerous than skiing. I grew up skiing and then switched to snowboarding in my 20s. If you want to minimize risk, then stay away from rails in the terrain park. Snowboarding is harder at first, but once you learn to turn properly, you improve very quickly. Skiing is harder to fully master and I still appreciate watching great skiiers. Good conditions are really the difference between a good day and a bad day no matter what you ride.

Kids don't break anything skiing, no matter how they fall. It's the parents who break things.

My son (MLS Next) does House Basketball and Flag football with schoolmates. He asked for it, he's a bit burned out with so much soccer.
